Okay, so my girlfriend likes to play video games and doesn't have a lot of money. She is sick of trying to game on cheap laptops. She mainly play role playing and puzzle games. She wants this computer to play games like Mass Effect, Talos Principle, Skyrim. etc.

I am upgrading my signature rig soon, and plan on giving her some of my old parts.

The colors of the build are purple and black, so I want to keep with those colors as much as reasonably possible.

Case - Xigmatek Vanguard EN5872 Black Steel / Plastic MicroATX Mid Tower Computer Case $74.99 - (She has told me she wants the smallest case that's practical for this build.)

CPU - Intel Core i5-4460 $189

GPU - Asus DCII GTX 570 Tripple Slot - (Free, donated by me)

EDIT: SSD- Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 256GB MLC $100

HDD WD Cavier Blue, 500Gb 7200 RPM (Free, donated by me)

MOBO ASRock B85M-DGS LGA 1150 Intel B85 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $54.99 (I needed something cheap with an internal USB 3.0 connecto to make use of the case)

EDIT: OPTICAL - DVD Burner - (Free, donated by me)

RAM - G- Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 MHZ. x2 4Gb sticks (Free, donated by me)

EDIT: PSU - XFX XTR Series P1-550B-BEFX 550W Fully modular $79

MONITOR - SAMSUNG S24D300H. 2ms response. 250 cd/m2 DCR Mega Infinity (1000:1)

ACCESSORY StarTech USBPLATE4 4 Port USB A Female Slot Plate Adapter $5 (Make use of those extra internal USB ports on the motherboard)

EDIT: KEYBOARD -Tt eSPORTS KB-CHM-MBBLUS-01 CHALLENGER PRIME Gaming Keyboard $30 (This is the cheapest keyboard with purple back-lighting I can find)

FANS - Corsair Air Series AF120 CO-9050015-PLED 120mm Purple LED Quiet Edition High Airflow Fan - THREE fans will be purchased for $15.00 each. (The case already comes with 1 fan, and four fans total this will max out the number of fans I can put in the case)

SPEAKERS - Z150 Multimedia Speaker Mid Bk $20 (She has told me time and time again, she doesn't really care that much about audio quality. Nor does she notice when something sounds "low quality".)

EDIT: OS - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM $100

FUTURUE UPGRADES: - Even with me offering to pay for half of it, she can't afford to put everything in the computer that we want to have right now. Here is a list of upgrade parts to add to the PC later in the year. (of course, subject to change as new stuff comes out)/

GPU UPGRADE - GIGABYTE GV-N960G1 GAMING-2GD GeForce GTX 960 2GB - $209

EDIT: HARD DRIVE UPGRADE - WD GREEN SERIES 2TB $80

UPGRADE RAM - Replace 4Gb sticks with 8Gb sticks. Price TBD

The Rosewill Capstone 550 watts is both better and cheaper.
But if there is going to be a GTX 960 in the system you dont need more then a 400-450 watts PSU.

Last if its just for storage you dont need a WD Black a WD Green can do just fine.

Does she really need a BD drive? I know I'd rather watch a BD movie on a big screen instead of a computer monitor, and $60 can go a long way towards better hardware on a budget build. You can get a name brand DVD burner for ~15 bucks...and honestly I don't even remember the last time I used an optical disk anyway, and even then it was just a DVD of software that I could have downloaded from the manufacturer in the same amount of time.

If she is insistent, then I understand having to work with that

I will definitely take the Rosewill power supply into consideration. In such a small, cramped, tiny case I am worried about cable management being a nightmare. That's why I went with a semi-modular power supply.

I just looked at performance benchmarks between the black and blue, and I agree that the black isn't worth the extra money.

She originally told me she wanted it before I finished tallying up the total cost of the build. Now that we are a little over budget, I may have to agree with you. I'll have to ask her again if she REALLY wants it.

Your going to have to spend some cash on software, most likely
ph34r2.gif
, to actually use it too.

Edit: also maybe use this mx100 256gb and save 25$

Changing the list to have a DVD burner instead. If she need to burn a Blue-Ray, she can just access borrow my PC. Yes, thanks for reminding me about the 4 hour headache it took to get the software to work on mine. I have a brand new DVD burner in my box of PC spare parts I can give her for free.

Also, updated the SSD on the parts list.

I thought greens still had excessive parking issues which degraded lifespan?

Also how much are you spending on that monitor cause, I've got you at roughly 600$ without one. That leaves 300$ for 1440p?

You still have that Thermaltake Toughpower PSU on your list.
If you dont like the Capstone what about the XFX XTR its better then the Toughpower its $10 cheaper AND its fully modular
XFX XTR 550 watts

I have mixed feelings about the g3258. I would definitely recommend a g3258 for an non-gaming computer, but for a gaming computer I would like a few more cores.

Regarding the Z97 Extreme 4 motherboard...
1.) That motherboard will not fit in the micro-ATX case I picked out.
2.) Even if the motherboard could fit the micro-ATX case, it would never run SLI/Crossfire and or need more than 4 SATA ports in a extremely tiny case on a budget build.
3.) Additionally, paying extra to support the insanely fast memory doesn't actually make a noticeable difference in games or any other real world application for that matter.
4.) Finally, she said she doesn't care about sound quality, so she doesn't care about having surround sound either.

....I don't think that type of motherboard is a good fit for her at all.

CPU - I was thinking the i5-4460 might be a little overkill. I definitely feel that a I5-4690K will be overkill. Does the extra $30 make a noticeable difference in games? We are talking about a 10% gain in speed. We are going with the stock heatsink in a small form factor case, so overclock-ability isn't something that we care about atm.

EDIT: HDD - Why is it better to have a single 2TB drive, than to have a 500gb drive (free) for storage and a 256 Gb SSD for games? She doesn't hoard movies or games. When she's done with something she will uninstall / delete. I would rather have the SSD now, and the bigger HDD later. Would you agree?

Motherboard - She wants the samllest case that's practical. That's not a micro-atx motherboard, and it's just overkill for her needs.

Video Card - I am providing her my video card for free for now.

EDIT: Case - She wants the smallest case that's practical for this build. That case seems to be much bigger to me. Also, the case I picked out seems to be very high quality....and I think my case looks sexier than what you picked. :)

EDIT: Power Supply - In a teeny, tiny, cramped, small form factor case I think cable management is going to be an issue. Going with the fully modular XFX for now, as opposed to the un-modular Rosewill.

EDIT: Keyboard - Will edit my parts list to include this keyboard now..

Other - She doesn't want Windows 8. Also, $25 for a full copy of Windows 8 seems shady and illegal.

CPU & Case - See my response to PontiacGTX above.

Mobo & Storage - okay, no change here.

R9 GPU - I'll wait to see what on the market in the future. She will use my GTX 570 for now, until she gets some more money.

Monitor - I would like that for my PC personally, but I doubt she will ever agree to spend that much on a monitor.

After making edit from suggestions made by the earlier posters, we are at a little under $900

Being just limited to a cpu that can not oc is lile wastin the money unless ylu are not thinking on the future.

Then save that money until you can see a deal on a ssd with more storage.they can drop to about 150,on some large modded games and games that will be bigger on a ssd should be easier to work with

If you will mod skyrim with textures, and if etc means playing a newer games of 2014 and 2015 some games games usually console ports that need more than 2GB vram at 1680x1050 and up.the 290 is 2x a 570 so you can sell the 570.

Windows 7 is about the same price at reddit.but anyway do it ro upgrade to Windows 10

Small mATX case? Vanguard is big IHMO at ~43 litres. An NZXT S340 which is an ATX mid-tower case, is smaller than that.

Try to check out the following cases if you guys want small mATX cases:

Sub $40 mATX:
Fractal Design Core 1000 < this would be my pick
Fractal Design Core 1100
Cougar Spike
Cougar MG100
Coolermaster N200 < another pick for me
Deepcool Smarter (if it is available in your area, costs $20 converted in our country)

Sub $70 mATX:
Fractal Design Core 1300
Coolermaster Silencio 352

If you can't safely overclock the CPU (extremely tiny case with stock heat sink) what is the point? I love to overclock and I'm pretty decent at it, I run my 3.2 GHz processor at 4.8 GHz 24/7 off air cooling. OC'ing my computer's just fine, but if it's somebody else's computer is a different story. I know my girlfriend isn't going to watch temps while gaming, and she is probably going to forget to dust the PC out. If I was going to overclock it, I'd probably want a small closed loop radiator to fit into the case.....and that would be a whole nother can of worms.

I run skyrim with mods (The GTX 570 is still in my computer, but a Gigabyte GTX 970 4GB is shipping to my house right now), and yes...with some mods on the 570 I run into problems....but most mods run fine. Going to sell the 570 and replace it with something faster in the future,...but in the mean time she will borrow my card until she gets more money together.

As far as the ASRock Fatal1ty Z97M Killer Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard goes, if I was trying to build a big budget, high power, over-clocking monster in a small form factor...I would definitely get that motherboard! For a "budget build" that's not going to be overclocked, never going to run SLI, and never going to have more than two hard drives, never going to use surround sound, that's ridiculously overkill.

I think buying Windows 8 because you want Windows 10 is stupid. Windows 7 runs just fine. I still don't know if Windows 10 is going to be a flop or not.

Anyways, I ordered the parts for the PC late last night.

Where the hardware was mostly my choosing, the case was mainly her choosing. Those cases are a little plain for her tastes, she wanted something a little flashyer.

I forgot to mention she really really REALLY wanted something with handles (or a deisgn that made it easy to pick up)! It doesn't make any sense to me, but she has this irrational fear of trying to drop it while moving it. It also had to be "different" and eye-catching.

Anyways, it doesn't matter now. We ordered the case late last night. But thank you for taking the time to give some suggestions!

I personally think a G3258 is the right choice. Here is a comparison between the G3258 and i7-4790K at both stock clocks and overclocked. The G3258 performs worse in pretty much every game tested, but the frame rates are mostly playable when overclocked. You also don't need an aftermarket cooler to overclock it to 4.5+ GHz.

Here is what I came up with:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor ($71.98 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97M Anniversary Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($114.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Mushkin Chronos 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($60.35 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($49.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card ($209.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: XFX XTR 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($66.98 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer ($14.98 @ OutletPC)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series Purple 2 pack 52.2 CFM 120mm Fan ($19.99 @ NCIX US)
Monitor: Asus VS247H-P 23.6" Monitor ($138.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $862.12
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

If you're anywhere near a Microcenter, you can get a G3258 for $49.99. I included a pair of purple LED fans for the front of the case. You already have RAM so that upgrade could wait and frees up $115. You can also save $50 by dropping the 1TB HDD since you already have a 500GB HDD for capacity. It's a shame the NZXT Vulcan is discontinued because I think that case would have been perfect.

No worries and you're welcome. I should have suggested NZXT Vulcan though! Flashy-ish mATX case with handles! They are not being made anymore sadly
