Sorry I've been out the loop for a few days. My CPU wasn't stable with my new motherboard. 40 minutes in to any game it would BSOD stop x124 error. Gamed for 5 hours last night without 1 crash after I adjust the voltage to the chip.

Yep, got same, i think it get capped on 127 % or so when is set to 150% in afterburn.
Not that you will need that in game probably for long time, but still. smile.gif

no its not capped, the power% readout is just not accurate and doesnt go all the way to 150%

If you want to MOD your BIOS and configure max power all the time without O/C software it is possible yes (but I still argue we all NEED to use one anyway for custom fan curve, monitoring, GPU O/C etc). You just need to take your MAX power value and your DEFAULT power value and make default SLIGHTLY LESS than max power. They CANNOT be identical, the GPU won't like that.

As far as watts, you will be able to pull more than 336W with a 980. The MOD BIOS in the OP is rated for 375W for a 980 (650W PS minimum recommended) so you could copy those power values if you wanted to they are thoroughly tested tongue.gif

Furmark/Kombuster/OCCT is a power virus and unlike any gaming/folding/benchmark etc.. It is designed to just keep drawing more and more power. I remember when I was working on the 980 BIOS I was able to remove the perfcaps even for Furmark/Kombuster however after leaving it running for 5 minutes they would show up. I was chasing my tail. It became pointless to try and eliminate them 100% because that would not only be completely unrealistic of a test but would put us into the "unsafe" realm of trying to supply more power than the rails/wire gauge are rated for, all just to satisfy a "power virus app".. (Not worth it). There should be NO perfcaps at all under any benchmark/game/apps and that's what we're looking for (like the recent report from Mr. 0xzz that helped us identify an adjustment).

If you want a stability test use FFXIV free benchmark @ 4k maximum settings (or DSR 4x). Furmark/Kombuster is just a TORTURE TEST for your GPU and doesn't accomplish much these days except bring power and temps way up. We now have benchmarks that can draw full power and generate high temps as well as simultaneously sending multiple varying types of GPU workload instructions instead of one that just targets power draw.

Caution when using Furmark and a MOD BIOS. If your power supply is "on the edge" (barely enough required power under heavy loads) this test could push it over the edge and pop your PSU. I never use this test anymore and I will eventually update the OP to reflect this. FFXIV free benchmark baby! yessir.gif

and here is what I say about this (not really in conflict with either, I just don't understand this calculation):

In the BIOS there is only ONE PLACE where you can even INFLUENCE the TDP% value by changing BIOS values.


What makes sense: The MAXIMUM value shown here is the maximum overall power allowed to the GPU across the PCI-e slot and both 8-pin PCI-e rails. It makes sense that this WOULD be an area in the BIOS that would influence TDP%.

What does NOT make sense: TDP stands for Thermal Design Power.

There is an entire section of the BIOS for TDP.. I could put just about ANY value here and NONE of it would influence TDP% values during testing... at all.. (what?!? either lowering or raising the TDP section of the BIOS has no influence on the reading??)

Here is the big one... Ok so here are two examples where the MAXIMUM POWER allowed is IDENTICAL, the only difference would be the default values.


So with the SAME MAXIMUM POWER defined in both examples - The one set to 150% would go as high as TDP137%. The one set to 110% would barely ever go over 100%. They are both configured with the same max power and would perform identically yet the TDP% reading would be drastically different in these examples. Shouldn't it be the SAME? lol

It does makes sense actually. The power % value shown in monitoring apps tells you how much the card draws versus the default power value set in the BIOS.

From the pictures above, in the first one this default value is 316000 so when the monitoring app shows 137% it means the card draws about 433000.

In the second picture the default value is set at 431000, so it makes perfect sense it would barely ever go over 100% under the same conditions.

That's the way I understand it anyway. Not sure how accurate it is compared to real life power draw though. And it has nothing to do with TDP.
