Mixing Z97 chip with Z87 board

Hi there guys!

I currently have an i5-4690k with an Asus Z87 Maximus VI Hero board. I'm wondering if there's anything wrong with mixing these two even if they're compatible. I'm sort of thinking that the z87 board isn't utilizing the power phase like what z97 boards do. I'm currently clocked at 4.4ghz @ 1.220v which isn't bad, but I'm thinking if the z87 board has something to do with me not being able to clock higher than 4.4ghz @ 1.2v, though I've seen people @ 1.20v - 1.220v on 4.6ghz overclock. Thanks for taking your time to read my post!

Hard to know whether or not it's just a poor draw in the bin lottery or not.
