Though the msi 980 gaming was purchased mainly due to the noise and heat factors, amd are going to have to match those for me to make a switch.

They defenitely will bring a card that is better than the 980. Price and performance are the great unknown.

I think the 390X will be 40-50% better than the 980 and cost 699-799$

You are aware that this so called pre caching you're referring to is also a space not just for higher fidelity textures but, as the name aptly suggests a frame buffer. All of this is currently controlled by the Direct-X 'magic' middle driver so developers can only really hint where they want these things to go. More memory allocation, the smoother the game. Sadly even with frame time comparisons it's not always clear cut where the benefit is, one needs to try two cards in a given scenario for themselves. Not for a second suggesting we need 12gb, but I think we definitely, as far as a high tier product is concerned need more than 4.

Extremely unlikely. Having two different SKUs that needed different die packaging, different board designs, and different memory controllers would be vastly more expensive than putting four more HBM stacks on the interposer.

You should know that anything less than the absolute minimum of 8K (50-60" 21:9 *VA/IGZO-IPS or OLED), and even then the absolute minimum requirement to not look like my daily deposit on the porcelain throne is 2x2 SSAA + 32xCSAA + 16x Transparency SSAA + 64K Textures (4K textures? Plebe!) + x4 SMAA...!

I mean I always figured that manicorn horn took up some of your much needed cerebral capacity, but I didn't want know it made you blind! :O

Thankfully, you can just solder a few hard drives onto your cards and finally have the mandatory 17.2TB onboard memory!

I'm not paying for any more space heaters so I'd love to see something with performance like that but only if they got the heat dump figured out. I don't mind how hot or cool the card runs with whatever special air/water/etc coolers. I just mind how much extra heat gets dumped into the room over time.

Sorry no idea about that, but if the 390X indeed has a hybrid cooling then the heat outpout should be within acceptable range. Maybe some people with a 295X2 can jump in share their experiences with it smile.gif

Well, if I ever decide to come out of my technological time warp and start using higher resolution than 1080p, the additional memory along with bandwidth might interest me. thumb.gif

As much as I don't want to think it, given the new technology, this is almost undoubtedly going to be another space heater. Unless AMD has some trickery up their sleeves... Not to say that the performance isn't going to be there... I'm hoping the Radeon 4XXX series all over again when it comes to price to performance when AMD introduced GDDR5 on their 4870 for the first time.

Looking forward to ACTUAL benchmarks after the NDA is lifted.

Expect 300W at the same efficiency of Titan X. And yes that is the same amount of power consumed and heat dumped by a R9 290X. Which is common for these kinds of cards. If your room can't deal with the heat output either a downclock or a lower tier card would provide a solution.

300W on air is the same as 300W hybrid or 300W on full on water cooling.

You are still going to have to dump 300W of power into your room and cool it.

I'm not picking on just AMD here ... BOTH AMD and nVidia really need to look at EFFICIENCY in doing the job with less power, and thus less heat.

Oh alright. I didn't know that. I thought if you are running something like 4 X SLI 780 Ti Classified OC'd on water that it would leave less heat in your room compared to running the same setup on air because the card gets hotter. headscratch.gif
