1080p doesn't give you the freedom to use displays larger than ~28" or so without giant pixels, but you can get up to almost a 60" screen and 4K still looks nice.
Well, yeah I think 1080p is horrible and way outdated and has held back the market for higher PPI monitors becoming mainstream. ...until that market fully saturated, then panel manufacturers scrambled to find the newest sliced bread.
Typical pixel pitch for 1440 and 1600... somewhere between .250 and .225 seem to be the sweet spot of display quality for the GPUs on the market today. Sure your eyes can resolve higher detail, but I think it's questionable if I need a large Retina ppi display for a monitor that my eyes are at least 20" away from.
The whole benefit of 4k, to me, is that >40" monitors will look exceptionally crisp and detailed. 4k for use as a TV is pure gimmick at this point.
