Will anything after that be needed? Well, it's questionable if we even need 4k monitors that are <30". But, there will be something after that. Once 4k monitor market has reached saturation the big push will be for 8k UHD. Once that market starts slowing down, of course, panel manufacturers will need a new product to push. I expect another big push for 3D after 4k market has matured.

Any reason we saw a 6gb 780 but never a 6 gb 780ti or an 8gb 980....

Does it make sense to skip this 28nm generation?

4k seems like a fantastic point for resolution to me... unless you're using like a 60"+ monitor, 8K seems excessive in a bad way for gaming.

1080p doesn't give you the freedom to use displays larger than ~28" or so without giant pixels, but you can get up to almost a 60" screen and 4K still looks nice.

We're still in super early adopter stage for 4K though, so maybe in 5-7 years we'll all feel differently.

There will always be new stuff to sell. It just depends on how well it's sold to the general public. There is 16k and 24k and even 48k I believe There is VR headsets which will see new models and improvements coming out every year and soon our world will become like the matrix ninja.gif

My hope is that resolution will eventually be high enough that nobody is pushing higher resolution displays, and then companies can start working towards a panel that has high refresh rate, high resolution, great contrast/color/black level/viewing angles, and whichever of freesync/g-sync wins the day. It bothers me that ever since abandoning CRTs, you have to pick and choose relatively severe trade-offs with which screen you buy.

I want a screen that does it all... it's a pipe dream for now but in 10 years who knows? biggrin.gif

People tend to forget we will get to the stage of being able to play 4k @ 144hz and hold good frames once the tech is there, it's only a matter of time. smile.gif

Well, yeah I think 1080p is horrible and way outdated and has held back the market for higher PPI monitors becoming mainstream. ...until that market fully saturated, then panel manufacturers scrambled to find the newest sliced bread.

Typical pixel pitch for 1440 and 1600... somewhere between .250 and .225 seem to be the sweet spot of display quality for the GPUs on the market today. Sure your eyes can resolve higher detail, but I think it's questionable if I need a large Retina ppi display for a monitor that my eyes are at least 20" away from.

The whole benefit of 4k, to me, is that >40" monitors will look exceptionally crisp and detailed. 4k for use as a TV is pure gimmick at this point.

I agree... the sweet spot for 4k use right now is a gaming PC in your living room on a huge screen. It's going to be a while before 4k is meaningful for anything other than driving it with a PC.
