Parcel will probably not be as big of a jump as that shows (arch wise). But it will get stacked memory.

It still infuriates me that none of the major review sites test ALL of their cards at max OC*! I'd love to see how a 1300+ MHz Titan X compares to a 1300+ MHz OG Titan (as well as a 1500MHz 980 and a 1250MHz 290X). I know that OC numbers vary card-to-card but that is just no reason not to include what I feel is far more relevant information about the cards' performance than stock numbers which are practically useless to anybody who is remotely an enthusiast...

*My biggest pet peeve (and something they do all too often) is OCing the new card being reviewed while leaving all the other, older cards at stock giving the impression that the "new" card is even that much more superior to the older ones when, in reality the older cards are quite capable of increased performance as well. Enthusiast review sites should know better and give us the most relevant data possible (which means OCing ALL cards to the maximum amount). Sure the numbers will vary from card to card but at least we would have a ballpark that is indicative of real-world performance rather than utterly useless stock performance vs the new card which is also OC'd to make it look even that much better than the old stuff....

Doesn't linustechtips do their benchmarks with all cards max OC?

I'm sure I read that somewhere... could be wrong tho.

How is that not fair? I think it was pretty clear I was comparing a single overclocked Titan X to 2x stock 780 Tis.

Just like the titan X really runs in the 1150-1250mhz area.

Aren't most 980's factory OC'ed? anyways, I would rather see clock for clock benches, if possible..

This is why comparing stock vs stock is easily the best way to go. Unless you are going to OC a whole ton of samples for each card, figure out an "average" OC, and bench all the cards at that, there is just too much variance and the results would come back skewed if they tested every individual card OC'd.

I get what you're saying, but practically, all it would do is present really skewed results that would not be sound for making purchase decisions.

Welp, finally got my ghetto, last-second counter-top test bench going.

I already had 8GB 290X drivers installed on this machine (it's unfinished as my case hasn't arrived), so I decided to throw on one of the other 8GB 290Xs on there and test those first. I forgot that, due to the size of the Sapphire Vapor-X 290Xs, they take up close to 3 slots, meaning I can only fit 2 on the X-99 Deluxe using the stock air coolers....so I'll only be able to test 2x 8GB 290Xs vs 2x Titan Xs as opposed to the 3x 8GB 290Xs I had originally planned. They just don't fit, simply because they were going to go under water to eliminate the spacing issue. Sorry dudes. frown.gif

I'm temporarily using an H60 to cool my 5960X as my loop isn't set up yet, so I did a quick/dirty ~4Ghz OC on the 5960X for now.

This is turning out to be way more work than I expected...and I need to take a break soon to get my work out in. tongue.gif

After testing some stuff with the 8GB 290Xs, i'll swap in the Titan Xs in there.... thumb.gif

can you guys clear something up for me?

the fp64:fp32 ratio is dependent on the architecture or the driver in this case? weren't we able to unlock gaming cards to workstation cards before?

Architecture. It's not unlockable, its part of Maxwell itself. One of the design choices they made, most likely to free up die space for more SMMs.
