Received "Brand New" Intel Xeon X5650 today - Page 2

There's nothing wrong with a server pull -- they've been run for 3-4 years in a controlled environment, and will easily run "forever" if mounted in a proper chassis with proper cooling.

I wouldn't be concerned.

BTW: This is what you would expect to find for "new in retail box" for a X5650.

Yeah. $560 a pop. No thanks, I'd take the $100 "refurb" and count yourself lucky that $1500 CPUs from 3-4 years ago are $100 now.

Greg

Hit every point I intended to make, thanks for saving me the trouble.

You DON'T know what condition they are in or how it was run. Run forever... yea I don't think so. A chip advertised as new when in reality it was a server pull (if lucky because no one knows) that could have been run in any condition equals you get what you pay for.

dunno about lasting forever part but i went through 2 used x5650 before upgrading and ran my x5675 oc to 4.4ghz for about 3 months before clocking down since no app was taking advantage of the extra performance.

don't worry about buying used, almost everyone i know off on here bought their x58 xeon used, and they been pushing hard oc on it for almost a year now. but for the price you would easily have gotten a x5670. which has more multi for you to play with.

Thread Starter
Well since I got a $20 credit, the actual cost was $92 which I guess was still overpriced? I just couldn't find a 5670 online and I'm not real comfortable buying things on ebay. I don't mind too much considering I'm not doing anything that will actually benefit from the slight increase in performance. I don't imagine the extra .2-4 Ghz being that much greater.

um at 92 dollars its still overpriced consider they go for 65 on ebay, hell i sold mine on here for 45 bucks.

if you're not overclocking these .4ghz can go a long way, but if you are only going fora modest 4ghz oc than a 5650 is all you need.

I've had over 100 of these running for years and not a single one has died. I wouldn't worry about life on these.

Yeah most silica is rated at 250,000 hours at 65*c so yeah plenty of life.

Honestly I think it's pretty crazy someone is trying find a brand new cpu that was end of life 5 years ago
