If they designed something that could compete with nvidia out of the box, the icing would be a boost from ryzen owners.
That would be exactly what AMD needs.

It is a tricky topic. Lisa Su was asked about such a synergy and said "our CPUs are often getting paired with nvidia GPUs, and our GPUs with intel CPUs". AMD has to make sure their products work perfectly with every combo and not get into pigeonholes. I still get questions by otherwise tech savvy people in the vein of "if i get an AMD cpu, will nvidia work with it fine?". AMD can't afford to be seen as a vendor to be paired with itself only.

Meh, for $250 what do we expect. kookoo.gif

I always use my antistatic baggies. Blocked my 480 and it now sits in the AS baggy in my EK RX480 box waiting to be used. biggrin.gif lol

What's in the picture is all it came with. I'm not sure what antistatic bag you're referring to but if it's not there then he didn't send it lol
For a second I considered messaging the guy and asking about why he just crumpled the box up and tossed it in there; but then I considered for a second that he sold it for $250. I should just be thankful I got a good working card for that cheap biggrin.gif

Exactly! Would be nice but there are a lot of fanbois who run nVidia. Imagine if AMD were to do that what kind of backlash that would have. Remember the Crysis/nVidia blowup? This would be to the 10th power x100 if AMD were to concentrate on their own gear to the detriment of the competition. mellowsmiley.gif

Well just to wade in here. AMD stated it would try to make back some of its investment in HBM 1. Would it be too much to guess that maybe the Fury line was planed for getting a refresh with new higher clocked cards in order to recoup costs. Maybe these strange benchmarks at higher clocks are for a potential Fiji refresh that may or may not see the light of day. Remember the speculation over RX 390 RX 490. It now looks an awful lot like the announced Xbox Scorpio GPU.

On another note. I got bored and tried a little experimenting today. I was wonder what a Duel-X Nano would look and work like. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Much quieter, but 9C hotter running due to heat sink optimization for single fan. Too bad.

Correction: I meant RX 490.

You bring a very interesting idea to light. Given AMD's bizarre refreshes lately this could be a possibility. I will say i would be very sad if the rehash fiji with 8gb hbm due to my furyx investments. However if Vega comes out against upper tier of nvidia then i wont care.

Kinda looks like my ugly hack, but at least its quiet now tongue.gif Still maxes out at 82C and the VRMs go to 90+C frown.gifWarning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

How'd you make that shroud fit?

Ya I'd be a little irritated too. Still crossing my fingers for Vega.

How'd you make that shroud fit?

Fans and brackets are from an old MSI GTX 560 Ti 2GB, same fan header plug as the Nano. The shroud is just a piece of plastic sheeting for testing and template purposes. If it had worked out well, the sheeting would of provided it self as a template for a sheet aluminum shroud. but I was not happy with the temperature results. So I am already back to the stock fan.

Here is a HwiNFO capture after a 3DM FS run with the stock fan.

Notice the peak temperatures I'm getting. @ 1050 MHz, 50% PL and 550 HBM.

I can clock higher (+50 MHz), But I run about 6C higher GPU and +8-9C on the VRMs. I'd would rather run cooler but noisier.

I'm only giving up about 600-650 points in FS @ lower clocks. So a fair trade off in my books.

Something strange is happening. Im using 17.4.4, final official bios from AMD for R9 Fury X - from april. I have unlocked the unofficial OC in MSI Afterburner with PowerPlay. Now, the strange thing. I can put up to 600Mhz HBM, and be stable in everything. Before my stable frequency was 520Mhz on 1.30V stock voltage. Did somebody encounter the same situation ? It's not normal for me.

Well, my Nano is currently running @ 575 MHz HBM, however that is with a modded BIOS which has added some extra voltage. HBM can happily go to 600 MHz with very little voltage jumps (not that it consumes loads of voltage either). Not sure why you're seeing such an improvement though.

I found a similar increase when going to custom BIOS. I started capped at 1175/540 but with custom BIOS I got up to 1200/630. I can bench higher than that, but it's terrifying.
No idea what the exact change that increased the cap so much was, but I'm not complaining biggrin.gif

But it is super odd... I was seeing artefacts above 520Mhz, and now - 600Mhz no problems. Stock bios, stock voltage 1.30V. I don't know really. Is there are a passability that AMD optimize something in the drivers (for HBM stability) for say..., coming of Vega ? Hm...

How much voltage from 540 to 630Mhz ?
