Best 771 CPU to give new live my 775 rig

Hi! I have a Gigabyte G41MT-S2 and I want to replace my old Pentium Dual-Core. I found that he bests are E5450 and X5460. The first it's 3Ghz@80W and the second is 3.16Ghz@120W. Which one will be easier to overclock? Will my motherboard enough to push the CPU so high or able to handle that CPUs?

While yes, you'll be able to run a xeon on that motherboard, G41's are definitely not good for overclocking and is pretty likely to die quickly if you start pushing the chip. I would get the fastest one you can and live with it at stock speeds.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. As you say, as I can't OC, I was talking to a frind and he can swap the motherboard with me. He has a Gigabyte EP43-DS3. I know that it has the wall at 420Mhz of bus, so it gives me a E5450 at 3780 Mhz or a X5460 3990Mhz. I have to change DDR3 to DDR2. Is it worth the swap to gain a few Hz? My main goal is run Battlefield 4, how do you see it?

Whats the rest of your rig? Not sure if you're going to be CPU or GPU limited until I know the rest of that.

I have a R9 280 ready to buy from a friend. So I will be very CPU limited. The thing is if the CPU will be enough

that g41 might not be the best overclocker but I'm willing to bet it will at least take an e5450 to 3.6ghz

Quads stress the fsb more than duals, so it might not quite make it that far

X5470 has the highest Multi, so technically would be the best overclocker.

Though a X5460/50 would be the way to go. Must be a E0 stepping though.

My Server runs a X5450 @ 3.6ghz, with less than 1.2v. (4ghz is a cake walk for these chips, also have a q9550 (e0) in my HTPC)

Only haven't gone further because of my 800mhz ram, which I don't really feel like overclocking. So if you do have 800mhz RAM, best not go over 400mhz FSB.

I do all of this on a Asus P5Q SE/R, which is just a cheap 4 phase P45 motherboard.

Make sure you flash your board's bios with a modified one that has the Xeon id codes. If you can't find one, let the guys in the 771 to 775 mod thread help you out. Else you will be missing instruction sets.

Thanks to all, guys. The thing is that the X5460 and the X5460 are 120W CPUs and the E5450 is 80W CPU. If my PSU in the 3.3V and 5V can only deliver 120W, isn't that indicating that I can't OC a 120W CPU because it will surpass 120W?
