[Forbes] Nvidia Explains Why Their G-Sync Display Tech Is Superior To AMD's FreeSync - Page 31

The ROG Swift has an OSD, G-sync doesn't preclude having an OSD. The Swift also has the most accurate factory color calibration I have ever seen on a gaming screen. How many people actually have the hardware to upload a new monitor LUT anyway? I have never owned a screen that had that capability or ever even seen a gaming screen that did. I do have a couple of color meters (i1d3) and I would upload a LUT if I could but I don't think you can call the inability to do so a major missing feature for G-sync.

I don't care about ports but I can see how that is a real negative.

1080p240 is probably easier on GPU than 4k60. Same amount of pixels per second, less VRAM used at any given time? so on graphically light games like csgo, totally doable even on mid range hardware (though maybe needs a strong cpu). I think the main problem is actually getting a monitor out there that can handle a 240hz input and strobe at that rate

The frame timing would be tricky at 240 Hz, Windows is not a real time OS and getting accurate frame times with only 4 ms to render them might be harder than doing 4K60. Also isn't there overhead when presenting frames? Of course this is assuming you have the VRAM for 4K, if not 4K isn't going to work well, but if you do simply having more VRAM used isn't going to slow anything down.

so much for a firmware update huh? rolleyes.gif

FreeSync is just a play on words, no matter what AMD called it, it was going to be FREE, since ALL AMD is providing is the "FreeSync Drivers" and of course you must buy specific AMD GPU's.

Oh, and there's no additional hardware, once you have the necessary hardware ( compatible scalers ) in each 1.2a compatible monitor. doh.gif

I was thinking about saving some $10-15K and just have one custom-made for me. It would be worth it if it really could do what I listed!

G-Sync is so good once you are under Max refresh rate but really sucks that after Monitor refresh Rate it's just V-Sync. Any monitor that is 60Hz and your game does not drop below 60 fps which is very likely will play like a VRR monitor.

NO mention of the ghosting or rather lack of in that pendulum demo? AMD should have gone with a similar low contrast demo and no-one might have noticed the ghosting.lols

It's not really worth it (to me) to spend hundreds of dollars more to get rid of tearing. If I can run the game at 60fps I leave vsync on, if not, I turn it off. The tearing usually only happens at the more intense scenes anyways. It's not like you'll have trearing constantly. I would rather spend the extra money on the gpu to get better performance.

If you want to buy a new high end monitor might as well spend the extra money for G-Sync but going out to buy a $800 monitor might not be right for everyone. I personally cant play below 40 fps. The game just feels too slow.

Or most monitors will come with A-Sync support in the future.
Quite simple, especially when a monitor that supports Freesync/ A-sync is not more expensive that a monitor that does not support this feature.

Sorry but if you think monitor vendor's will add additional hardware/functionality without asking more money for it, you are delusional.
Also a big claim that most monitors will come with A-Sync since as a far as i know, its still optional.
