I'm looking for a "new" modded X5470 to put in it or the fastest CPU I can get
I've got 16gb of GSKILL ddr3-1333 cl9-9-9-24 ram
Could anyone please tell me which CPU to get for max performance.
My GPU is a Nvidea 280gtx (which also needs upgrading lol)
Thank You !

The Xeon processors seem to be the best bet for LGA 775, just double check compatibility at delidded.com

I'm building an LGA 775 setup for fun/nostalgia, although the price of used 790i's are way more than I want to spend. Guess I'll be reusing my old 680i LT, lol.

I would say the X5470 because it has a 10x multiplier. It requires a socket MOD, a CPU MOD and a BIOS update if your motherboard supports it. It's not quite plug-n-play but very much worth it in the end. It will run circles around your Q6600.

Does anyone have any experience emulating Nintendo Wii games in Dolphin / Ishiruka? Most Gamecube games emulate great on my x5470 790i system clocked at 4.5ghz but I have not been able to get Star Wars Rogue Squadron III Rebel Strike working smoothly in the land based levels like Hoth. A lot of users who have 4th gen I7s or better have stated the game plays completely smooth in all levels on the latest version of Dolphin. In the levels that lag for me,

I noticed the CPU usage on the two cores that Dolphin uses are not maxed out but even so I'm experiencing low FPS in these levels despite loads of performance tweaks I've tried for Dolphin and Ishiiruka. Could this be because Dolphin is using some optimization tricks only available on newer CPUs?

It's definitely not my video card as this machine has a Gigabyte 1070 Gaming edition. The interesting thing to note is that most the spaced based levels play smooth at 60fps.

Are they all the same or is there a specific model thats better than another..?
Thank You for your help
Also where would one fine a BIOS needed for this mod..?

I would check here http://www.delidded.com/

There's also a thread on OC.NET

Hope this helps smile.gif

Not at all.. It will work just fine. I was running (2) GTX 980Ti's in SLI and PCI-e 2.0 was NOT a bottleneck at all. You could even run SLI with no issue biggrin.gif

790i deserves so much more recognition. It was an incredible chipset, learning from all prior "issues" (with 680i and 780i) that still stands strong today. It's downfall was actually calling it "790i" because it was immediately associated with the 2 prior chipsets that had some major issues. NVIDIA was really giving us a great chipset that performed VERY well and supports all 45nm flavors and basically anything you can throw at it.

I covered this early in this thread, but NVIDIA didn't leave the chipset business because they couldn't compete... they left the chipset business because they lost the license for x86 when intel changed sockets. This was unfortunately JUST after 790i which made it NVIDIA's last desktop chipset. sad-smiley-002.gif

So I finally picked up an evga 790i FTW...

I have a qx9650 and some ddr3 2000 1.65v.

What case/GPUs should I run? I have an 5930k/980ti for my main computer. This will probably be regulated to movies/etc:o

I'm really tempted to pick up 3 8800 ultras:rolleyes:

Does anyone know of a NB/SB waterblock that's still available?

The chipset gets very hot but I was able to manage the temps by using a good fan blowing down on top of the heat sync. I wouldn't invest in a block cooler it's probably not worth it TBH. I didn't notice any O/C headroom when I water cooled my chipset on my 790i.

You can run any GPU you want to in this board including GTX 10x0 series. I was running 980Ti's in SLI on it smile.gif

Just get a GPU that has HDMI out so you can run your audio from the GPU also (100% lossless)
