I wasn't aware that Socket 1366 also had a Xeon "drop in". So what did you need to do? Hack BIOS that's it?

I got my (2) 980Ti's in also, but one of them is defective so I'll wait for things to get settled and I'll share some more scores. So far, my system isn't bottlenecking at all. Looks like this '08 system might see 2016 too! biggrin.gif

YUP!

Pretty much all of the X58 boards (well the decent mainstream ones) are Xeon capable! The overclocking and the platform is still alive and kicking!
The boards with the NF200 chips and the extra lanes are really good too, they just had weird issues with crossfire on new AMD cards since it was done throught the PCIe lanes with no bridge.

The enthusiast chipsets are the ones that live the longest. Unfortunately everything you said about the consumer space is correct, it is very stagnat!

I've got w10 running on an e7400 ( at 3.2) in a XFX 750i sli and it works great. ( secondary rig ) Didn't have any problems with the upgrade either. thumb.gif

So awesome!! Did you find the Xeon overclocks like a dream also?

I think this certainly re-defines the term "Overclocker" when we're cutting out plastic, putting special pin conversion stickers on and hacking the BIOS so that we can jam Xeon chips into our rigs (AND IT WORKS PERFECTLY), you gotta love it (and I bet even Intel was like DAAYYYMM!!). It's a fun project like no other.

+1 thank you so much brother!

That's some great news and a good sign for the 790i's. Would you be able to post a screenshot of device manager showing the system/chipset drivers by any chance? Does anything come up as "unknown" device? Does it seem to be using native drivers or prior O/S drivers?

Lastly, what O/S did you upgrade Windows from?

Thanks!

***!!!! two 980s in that cpu, man that an inmense bottleneck, i have a rampage formula x48 with a q9550, and it is an awesome pc, not my main one tho, but you are loosing a lot of performance with that cpu

You are technically correct however synthetic benchies/apps are really where that's proven, not really in games TBH. I need a CPU upgrade for sure, there's no question everything newer beats it but games haven't really caught up to taking full advantage of newer processors.

This is a sad chart indeed, but is what it is I guess:

Games didnt caught in the way that they dont use all the cores or the newer set of instructions, but really man, games now at days use 2-4 cores except battlefield 4 that is optimized for multicore, but the per core performance increace is something that the whole os and everything takes advantage of, linus made a video some time ago comparing kentsfield to haswell and it was like 60-65% per core increase at the same clocks, that is huge man. I dont know how you wouldnt notice, when i changed my q9550 with the 2500k i saw a huge improvement.
Battlefield is known to be a gpu intensive game, that is why nearly every cpu has the same fps

I just wanted to mention that BF multiplayer is indeed very CPU intensive. Most, if not all benchmarks you see on tech sites are for SP.

Good points for sure, I agree 100%.

I really wonder how DX12 is going to factor in this discussion also. We're all pretty much waiting for that killer game or killer benchmark for DX12 to see what it can really do. wink.gif Initial impressions seem to be quite positive regarding a significant boost in GPU performance and seems to be less dependant on CPU to send the instructions (AKA my bottleneck).
Dx 12 is supposed to make games utilize all the cpu cores and new instructions, right now games dont use more than 4 cores, thats why a core i5 performs the same as an i7 in all the games, they are only taking advantage of per core performance increase of new processors.
Maybe we see cpus as the xeon x5650 get use of all its cores and smash everyting, i really dont know what to expect, i always say that software cant fix hardware, and really, per core performance will be always the most important thing on a gaming pc, right now a core i5 4690k has double the performace per core of a fx vishera cpu and the same multicore performace, so like i said, i dont think that dx12 will make some cpus shine over others as their per core performance is lower than your core 2 quad cpu
