APPRAISAL: Good buy on a budget? - Page 3

Everyone, my co-worker already purchased the machine and I already looked up the power supply, it is a cooler master 460 generic unit but I did a bit of research and it's not a guaranteed fire hazzard, in other words it could do a lot worse for the money. And around here the used market sucks, full of people wanting retail prices for their used crap. Saw a guy trying to sell an 8320 rig with a 7770 for $1000. you tell me how cheap you think you can get parts around here used lol.
Same guy who sold it is offering to sell me the same cpu for my plex server for cheap. thumb.gif

btw. my co-worker LOVES the machine for the price. He wasn't actively looking but i know he wanted to do a build in the future, i just ran across this deal and persuaded him to buy.

i3 2100 is still better than a haswell celeron. My old htpc was an i3 2100 it ran sweet, was easily capable of gaming too. Btw those peices you said are extremely cheap. Not everyone can get those things so cheap. So still a good deal

You can buy Windows for $15 all day long on Reddit if it really matters that much to you.

The time it would take to hunt down the deals for these parts, and the cost is about equal...time is money dude, and an extra $30 ain't worth much time.

First off this is how I'm placing the pricing on this stuff:

Junk PSU: $0 (probably raidmax combo'd with the case)
Junk case: $10
i3-2100: $50
GTS 450: $30
120GB HDD: $10-$15
H67 Mobo - $30
DVD drive $5
8GB of RAM: $45

So like $170 is what I would pay for that and since the PSU is junk it'll probably blow up anyway. For $50 more at $250 you can do way better in the used market.

Let me give you a few examples of what I have to work with in my CL area...
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/sys/4922444902.html Core 2 quad with 8600gts for $300
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/sys/4910757538.html another core 2 machine with a gts 285 for $275
ooh how about a nice fancy dell core 2 duo with a 4550 video card for $200? http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/sys/4947748266.html

yeah. a lot of overpriced crap being sold from uneducated users in my area... Pretty much why i jumped at this computer and it was exactly what my co-worker wanted. cheap, not too old, and functional. In my opinion anything core 2 quad and older is not worth much. Don't even give me the 771 xeon in a 775 motherboard schpeel either cuz it's not something a user who is just starting off in computers would want to undertake.

The prices I'm quoting are not from CL but from tech forums online or Reddit. I'm not saying you got a horrible deal but if you wanted to spend a few days buying parts you could have done better. That's all. The hardest part to get would have been the case IMO.

Obviously CL anywhere is going to have super overpriced parts from people who don't know any better, but sometimes you can find people who aren't idiots on there.

Well this person that sold the computer was just going back to school for computer science so he wasn't completely clueless, yeah i had to educate him on a few things but it was a 1 stop shop for me and my co worker that wasn't going to take a week for all the parts smile.gif
