See, I value actual art, not just polygons, lighting, etc. I very much love the God-like experience because I hate rotating the camera. Its one of the reasons I disliked DA:I. Anyway, all this is definitely a matter of opinion.

All of this is not opinion, although what you like and dislike is of course opinion. Most of the issues I point to about Pillars of Eternity are concrete, tangible things, as is the shallowness and lack of role-playing in Baldur's Gate 1, but indeed these things don't bother everyone.

You judge RPG's so strictly to their categorization title "Role-Playing Games" that any RPG-like game, such as Witcher 3 or PoE, is automatically excluded as a good interesting game to finish since it doesn't have classic Role-Playing elements, which aren't coming back. I bet even Torment: Tides of Numenera won't have near the same level of classic Role-Playing features as Planescape: Torment... "The whole is greater than sum of its parts". Have you heard of that before? Fallout 4's features are very close to the classic role-playing style you enjoy, but as a whole game, its not that great...

Besides, PoE gets so much better the closer you get to the end that the more you play, the less you want to stop.

Numenera is more like visualized novel rather than even (the supposedly story driven) crpg from what I played in like 3-4 hours of early access

Thats what I was hoping, as long as its a good story. It has a lot to live up to for me. smile.gif

I've really enjoyed PoE so far, Ive felt the quality of the writing good overall, definitely a level above anything else Ive played in recent memory, although thats not saying much. Ive enjoyed the side quests on their own merit as well which is unusual for me in recent RPG's.

As for the gameplay, I dont spend as much time analyzing the gameplay mechanics as some, but at 40 odd hours in Ive found the spells, interesting and varied as far as Ive got and there are quite a few skills to choose from on leveling up. It would have been nice to have more class specific ones maybe, but perhaps more may open up as I level up more.

Its been a long time since Ive played NWN 2 though to compare it to that, but I'm having to pause and think about combat skills a lot of the time, which I like. I also much prefer a tactical view over first person for a party RPG, and its getting me all nostalgic having to auto save every 10 seconds in case of death.

I might well do a run through BG2 when I finish it and maybe NWN 2 as well, it will be interesting to compare with Pillars fresh in my mind. But overall judging by the amount of fun I'm having with it, it holds up pretty well.

You could not be more wrong.

  1. I don't automatically exclude games for those reasons.
  2. Pillars of Eternity does have all of the classic role-playing elements, so you didn't understand any of my previous posts.
  3. Classic role-playing elements still exist so the "coming back" idea only applies to mainstream AAA RPGs.

Also I doubt Planescape: Torment will have more "classic role-playing features" than Torment: Tides of Numenera. Even Pillars of Eternity has more of them, yet I didn't like Pillars of Eternity while I love Planescape: Torment so you're quite confused. Furthermore, Pillars of Eternity has far more classic role-playing than Fallout 4... you getting that backwards is just mind boggling. No need to throw any quotes at me, everyone knows of that quote. I just take issue with a lot of shortcomings and flaws in PoE.
