16GB Ram & Sapphire R9 280?
or
8GB Ram & MSI R9 280X?

Rest of the system is looking to be:
i5 4690K
MSI Z97 Gaming 7

If you're just gaming, 8GB of ram is enough.

Ditto

Unless your doing something that needs more then 8GB of ram, stick with the 8GB Ram & MSI R9 280X.

8gb and a better GPU looks like the plan then.

Thanks for the PSU heads up, I'll have another look for that.

*PSU is looking like an EVGA Supernova 650W 80+ Gold.

Whats the budget for your purchase?

Because newegg uk has a r9 290 for 177GBP

As stated remove that corsair CX, literally none of their PSU's are good value.

personally I'd change out the MSI gaming 7 down to the gaming 5 or similar and put the extra money into a better cooler.

Temps of the chip are going to limit you in overclocking, not the board (unless you buy a really low end model ie the asrock Z97 anniversary)

I am trying to keep the initial build under £800. So assuming 8gb RAM I have £170-180 for the GPU.

Thx for the Mobo > Cooler suggestion but I'm not looking for a massive OC. If I need it in the future then I'll probably have the £s for liquid cooling then.

*Just had a look at Newegg UK, once shipping & Tax have been added price goes up to £250.

No I haven't bought all the components yet. If you can improve the Spec without spending any more money I'd be impressed.
