Windows 7 to 8.1 - Page 2

None of my Steam games give me problems either. Nothing I have played on my 8.1 machine has ever given me any problems. I have yet to experience any driver compatibility issues either.

You may be experiencing some unrelated, or isolated issues, my friend.

Performance Advantage

Is there a performance advantage in Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7 for BF4? The answer is, "Yes." We consistently found that under Windows 8.1 BF4 performed faster than Windows 7 on both AMD and NVIDIA hardware. Both GPUs, from both vendors, had a consistent performance advantage in every test we performed. More importantly, in the real-world multiplayer gaming session that matters, there was a performance advantage.

Are there gameplay experience advantages under Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7 in BF4? The answer is a, "Big YES."

Under Windows 7, we experienced choppiness as we played. This was felt both in the "Test Range" map, and in multiplayer gaming sessions. The choppiness was more pronounced on the GeForce GTX 780. We could get on a straight path, in the "Test Range" and move down a straight road. As we did this, there would be a pause, or chop, in the frames randomly. It was like the game was hitching for no reason. This happened more on the GTX 780. This is under Windows 7.

When we tried this on Windows 8.1 the pausing, or hitching, or chop (however you want to describe it) was completely gone. Moving was smoother with no hitching in the game on the GTX 780. This affected both the test range and the multiplayer gaming session.

Therefore, the gameplay experience advantage under Windows 8.1 is a smoother gameplay experience in BF4 on both video cards.

If you're just upgrading, meaning you already have a W7 build currently in place and it's stable, you might as well just wait for the W10 update.

Same, zero issues and have played well over 200 games.

I'll take the 2 fps gain, and just not use the Metro UI like someone's forcing me to.

Id have to say if u have to buy a new os for a new build anyway i say go for it. but id say keep 7 on ur gaming rig and put 8 on the htpc, less hassle for you would use ur rig for more things and have to deal with incompatibilities with 8 if any than for it just to be a video server os... or like stated wait for win 10 i been using it for a month now and its a windows 7 8 hybrid love it so far. hope this helps

Nothing wrong with my system, I can guarantee that. Might be something wrong with my game choices, as I do play some pretty obscure stuff. Mostly indies with a few years behind them.
Most are as simple as setting compatibility mode to 7, so it's not all that big of a deal, but it's an issue nonetheless.

W8 is a more refined version of W7. Some nice quick tricks and some added features. The only difference is when you click the "Windows" button, instead of a small start menu on the bottom left popping up, your entire screen becomes a start menu. However, everything else is the same - but again with that added refinement.

W10 - no official release date.

Not worth the hassle of switching, as the most of the "Improvements" (if you want to call them that) are all visual and not performance oriented. Wait for Windows 10 and lets see what that brings to the table.
