Windows 7 to 8.1 - Page 3

Now, just to be clear, without assuming too much, when we're referring to Win 8, what we in fact mean is 8.1. 8.1 fixed nearly all of the problems most people complain and gripe about from Win 8.

I'm not sure where some are getting that no performance enhancements have been made in 8.1? Because there are plenty. It is definitely not just a pretty new skin.

@plottingCreeper, that would be my first suggestion, that your game choices are the cause, and not the OS itself. Would mean there is something within the game itself that is incompatible with the OS, not the other way around.

What performance improvement does 8 / 8.1 have over 7? And don't even mention the boot speed. A cold boot on either system with a fresh install of 7 or 8 / 8.1 will be a very small gain at best.

Some people call 2-3 fps gain going to 8 / 8.1 a performance increase. Realistically, it's just margin of error.
I can tell you from a technician perspective that i much prefer working with windows 8.1 than I do with windows 7. While most of the OS is similar, windows 8.1 has the advantage when it comes to the ability to refresh/restore without depending on a manufacturer's recovery partition. There are also some extremely nice tools available in windows 8/8.1 for diagnostics and repair that either werent in windows 7 or lacked the expanded functionality that was added when they changed to windows 8.1.

Thanks

Honestly for a new build I would. Since it's an htpc the win 8.1 start menu will come in handy I think. I was a big 8.1 "disliker" until I forced myself to use it. It's really not that different from 7 If you choose to hang out in the desktop (which I still do) but while I hated the 8.1 start screen at first, once I tinkered with it I now LLLLLOVE it!

I recommend literally removing every single item from it and just pin the programs you actually use, it makes the start menu so much more efficient. Not to mention I love right clicking on the bottom left Windows icon to get all the admin shortcuts biggrin.gif

I say for your htpc get it!

If you're doing a fresh install anyways, it could be worth giving 8 a try.
Windows 10 will be a few months away, minimum. I don't suggest using the tech preview, as in the license, there's something about it just suddenly stopping working some time in April IIRC. Oh, and the aggressive keylogger...

Ok, the keylogger is something Microsoft was up front about. It is used for testing purposes. And for the people who want to get paranoid about what all information is being sent out, IT CAN BE TURNED OFF. Just go through the custom options during install and disable it. Voila..

But seriously without firing up an argument about it, how else are they going to work out any tweaks that may need to be made to the various hardware and software systems use unless they get feedback from those users? You have 2 options, either provide feedback willingly with them sending some of your usage and error information so that issues may get fixed before release. Or do nothing and, wait until after release and complain about whatever issue you have after the fact.

Wow, feisty.
I have no issues with the keylogger, especially since it also says that the tech preview is not to be used as a main system. It's technically not even a keylogger, but hey, who even understands the difference, right?
Either way, we know it's there, we know why it's there, and hopefully, we all know that it's really stupid to use it as ones main system.
My main point with that was it actually fully stopping working, which is going to screw over all the people using it as their main OS biggrin.gif

Not much of a boost but maybe things are different now. However with Windows 10 on the horizon I would just sit back and wait for its release

Yes, I apologize for aiming that at you, it was not my intention. I just get irked when people bring up the "keylogger/tracker" as a reason to disregard the TP entirely.

I agree, as it stands right now, we don't know 100% for certain what's going to happen with these Tech Previews when release time comes around. Their initial response was that these Tech Previews will just quit working like you said. When I first started using the TP, it said I had 190 days before it would no longer be usable. But they may offer some type of in place update/upgrade for those on the TP to move to a full release version.

Personally, I think it's just better to not use TPs as ones main OS. No matter what they log, there's the issue of what's going to happen?
Because of that license agreement, M$ is well within their rights to frag your HDD when the preview is over. They probably won't, but they can.
