My concerns are that i hear amd's drivers are wacky, i only have an 850 watt psu, i dont want my case running hot as hell from 2 amd chips, and i think the matrix will be my "single card solution" as it is at the top of my price point. i cant afford to sli 2 980's nor can i get a titan z. so in closing, what is an upgrade from the kingpin that i had before?

What will be the higher resolution?or what resolution will you use the most of the time?

the GCN GPUs are fully compatible with directx12 and amd worked with microsoft Developing their directx12.

The only that needs some fix on amd drivers are the CF profile Some were not updated on Time

I guess I'll just be upgrading to probably the 144 mhz asus 24 inch monitor at first. To be honest I never had anything that would go higher than 1080p and 60hz.

How bout the 8gb vaporX sapphire 290x card? It's twice the memory for cheaper than a 980

if you wont use VSR at 3200x1800 on a console port with AA 4 GB should suffice

It has a slightly higher clock speed: 1342 vs 1393, but its also slightly cheaper

Personally I would not want to run 3 monitors with a 980, 3 1080p monitors is 25% less demanding than 4k. Watch the below video then divide the frame rate by 0.75 to get the framerate with 3 1080p monitors.

But I like the idea of putting 3 monitors together as a kind of surround dispLay. Not now but eventually. The 4k seems tight but to be honest I haven't even seen above 60hz refresh or 1080p In person. I am a gamer and want the best I can get on the budget i'm on. Also I think my mobo might be handicapped as far as pci lanes go anyway as in not true 2x16 but 1x16 and 1 1x8 when run in tandem. This is all a tad confusing.

Well, 1080p @ 144hz would be fine with either 290x or 980. Triple? No, you would probably still want to go SLI or xfire for that. A single 290x or 980 should be fine for any single monitor up to 1600, of course you may need to compromise a few settings with a few games.

At this point, I probably would have recommended you keep your 780Ti because a 980 or 290x isn't going to offer you a whole lot more. With 390x approaching, I think it's not the best time to recommend a 980, especially since you plan on upgrading to triple monitors later.

Maybe SLI 970 for 3x 1080, or a couple of 290's would work? Not sure, someone with SLI or xfire experience would know much better than I would....

ok thanks guys, i would mark this one as solved but don't know how to do that. i'll prolly just go with the matrix cuz it looks dope, unless i can find 2 lightenings around the same price which is looking kinda iffy anyway. thanks again. the 295x2 is almost same price for the xfx one but its still the older tech for the direct x 11.2 or whatever and not direct x 12 and opengl whatever. anywhoo. thanks again.

295x2 is DirectX12 capable, all GCN cards are.

And you'd be better off with 1 295x2 than 2 290X's. Running 2 blower style 290X's is going to be hard to cool, especially with summer around the corner. 1 295X2 will be quieter, run cooler, and offer the same gameplay capability of 2 290X's in crossfire.
