Fan choice for RX480 (low fpi density radiator)

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm looking for some fans for my RX480.

I have 2 scyhe kazemaster fan controllers to control upto 8 fans, so don't really required PWM at all.

I've had High Performance Edition SP120's on it before, and they made a bit of a hum on lower rpms.

The fans I'm considering are:

Aerocool DS 120mm
Corsair SP Quiet edition 120mm
Noctua P12 120mm (but a tad expensive, and they don't do these in redux range)
Scythe gental typhoons 1150 rpm 120mm, link below:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Scythe-Gentle-Typhoon-120mm-1150-RPM-Fan-D1225C12B3AP-13-/281639766486?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item419309c9d6

The typhoons seem like a good buy, I would probably be running fans at 800-1000rpm realistically.
I've not used GT's before though, but people say they are good, the aerocool look good too, but a few people saying they aren't so good.

Please advise before I buy, as I've bought the wrong fans in the past, and I hate to waste money.

Thanks for any help.

You really won't see much difference in performance or noise with fans at low speeds (1200 RPM and below for me anyway). I would recommend going with whatever fits your budget and aesthetics. If the GTs work for you, then they would be great for sure.

GTs are easily the best, no reason to pick anything else.

Shame they discontinued these fantastic fans frown.gif
Only have 6x AP-15 and all in use :l

Thanks, I heard they don't undervolt very well though.

Or maybe thats more the higher rpm versions.

There are some 500 rpm fans available, but thats surely too low.
And I can't get hold of 800 rpms.

So would the 1150rpm fans be quiet if I had to undervolt them to about 900-1000 rpm?

Thanks
Fans are fairly quiet at around 1000 RPM's. Once you go above 1400+, then they get loud.

I undervolt mine at below 450 RPM and I have no problem controlling 8 fans per channel. It just depends on the fan controller you have.

Personally, I prefer the GT's tonal signature compared to the SP's. I never had noctua's, so I can only compare the GT's and SP's.

Nidec still makes the fans. They never had been discontinued. Scythe and Nidec had a fallout.

If you're looking for cheaper GT's, you can buy it cheaper at Dazmode.com if you don't mind waiting.

Otherwise, you can get them at Coolerguys as well.

Maybe it's just me but I think the 1850 rpm GTs are quiet?

well, this is all just opinion, but after trying so many fans above 1500rpm... I think AP-15 is the quietest at max speed.
However, that's relatively quiet... running any fan below 1200rpm definitely sounds quiet to me.
If that's the fan speed you are looking for, I honestly would recommend to pick whatever aesthetically fits.

Okay, well I've just bought 5 of them, the 1150rpm speed.
I offered £8.75 each (NEW) which was accepted, but they are on amazon for around £19, so I can probably sell them on without loss if I have to.

I have the RX480 and an AlphaCool XT45 120, so I figured 5 fans the same would be good.

One other thing, on the 480rad, I'm currently pulling air through the rad as I have the wrong fans on it(noctua nf-s12b air flow fans), and in push they are too noisy as the air bounces back.
I've noticed the top of the radiator seems to have collected a lot of dust and small hairs as its been pulling air in, I guess thats the downside to pulling in cold air.

But I guess I can choose what I want with the GT fans, perhaps push would be better, so that I'm exhausting air out of the case, as my case temps started to get pretty warm, mid 30 ish.

So I'll see how it goes, thanks for help.
