Why don't you sell the i7-2600, and purchase a secondhand i7-2600k? If you sell your non-k 2600 for $160, I suspect you could probably find an i7-2600k for $180ish if you look hard enough (maybe even less?). You would be out of pocket about $20-$40 with that decision.

I just don't see the long term value of going from an i7 to an i5 in the same generation (even if it's to an unlocked unit).

It's not exactly the same, but this reminds me of the older argument several years back of between a core 2 q6600 and e8x00 since they were around the same price, though the e8x00 overclocked a lot better. One justification I heard was that games don't use more than 2 cores. I recall several people who bought e8x00 ended up selling it and purchasing a used q6600 later on when games started taking advantage of more threads.

^ Agreed. You could also go for a 3770k but they're basically the same.

@ OP

I don't think you would see an increase in the amount of fps in most games, but minimums should be higher. Games where they're more cpu dependent, like Crysis and BF as mentioned, is where you would see the most benefit from more cores/higher clocks. At least, in terms of max FPS.

I went from a 3570k to a 3930k and the only difference I noticed was minimums. Different scenario but it's the only experience I have had with CPU upgrading
