Building low end PC

Thread Starter
Hey, my father's PC broke, an OEM Packard Bell desktop.

I think the PSU died and took the mobo with it. Black screen when i start PC up, resetting CMOS doesn't do anything.

It's a core 2 era cpu and since those mobos are super expensive now I think it's better to get new mobo + CPU + DDR3 RAM. Will also use a lot less power I think than the core 2 quad it now has. Micro ATX form factor and I'll try to reuse the case.

Just to be sure, is this micro ATX? http://microdream.co.uk/asus-pts73-packard-bell-stingray-socket-lga775-core-2-quad-motherboard.html#.VRg5gfmsWFG

Not sure yet to go Intel or AMD. I'm not gonna get a discrete GPU so i'm thinking AMD.
This is what I'm considering:

-AMD A4-4000 2Core 65W FM2 1MB 3.2GHz BOX
-Asrock FM2A88M-HD+ Mainboard Sockel FM2+ (mciro-ATX, AMD A88X, 8x SATA III, 2x DDR3-Speicher, DVI-D, HDMI, 2x USB 3.0)
-Kingston KVR13N9S8/4 Arbeitsspeicher 4GB (1333MHz, 240-polig, CL9) PC3 10600

But the ASRock looks more rectangular than the PB mobo so i'm not sure it's micro ATX.

Any suggestion to go cheaper, or better performance for same price?
I also need a PSU, any suggestions? I think 250W will be enough.

Thanks in advance.

1. Looks like mATX to me.
2. AMD would be a great option.
3. As long as it is mATX, it should be fine.
4. I'll make you a build below. Follow it if you want to.
5. I'd go with the lowest wattage PSU available from FSP or something like that.

Except you want more than single channel RAM. I'd grab a 2x2GB kit.

Very, and I mean very, little performance gain between single and double channel configuration, zero performance gains that are tangible could be had at the level of use this computer would be for. The only time dual, quad, etc, channel memory and even higher memory frequencies counts is in encoding/decoding, modeling/rendering, etc. Even in gaming there is little gain with higher performing memory configurations.

Single vs dual is actually quite a jump compared to dual vs higher channels.

I would not be running single channel RAM if I had a choice.

With such little amounts of RAM, the channel configuration means nothing. However, if you had 1 8GB stick; I'd advise replacing it. But for 4GB? DDR3 bandwidth should support that on a single channel well.

Single vs dual will not matter in this case.

Spoken out of experience. Not worth arguing if its not worth the extra cost.
