[WCCF] AMD CPU And GPU Roadmaps For 2015-2020 Officially Emerge - Page 4

Am I the only one seeing the vague "Next-gen GPU" meant to be Hawaii's successor on that roadmap intended to last through both 2016 and at least part of 2017? That can't be Fiji if this roadmap is accurate... it makes no sense. Why wouldn't AMD be planning to replace whatever they release this year (presumably Fiji) in 2016 with a 14/16nm successor ASAP? If they're following that roadmap and Hawaii's placement at the beginning of 2014 is simply rounding from the end of 2013 when Hawaii was actually released, their Hawaii successor isn't slated to be released until late 2015 by this roadmap, as well, and if that's not the case then this roadmap is incorrect.

If it is the case and they really intend to both wait until late 2015 to release Fiji and ride it out for at least two years with no replacement then AMD have lost their minds and just handed Nvidia the keys to the Kingdom of Milking... again and worse than before. What in the name of the silicon gods do they think they're doing? They've either presented an inaccurate roadmap, or a very poor GPU strategy.

yeah. The 14nm APU with quad core Zen (with some kind of SMT), the next gen GCN with 1280 - 1536 cores and HBM would be a powerhouse APU. The APU with HBM is going to make the entry level 100 - 120 sq mm discrete GPU totally unnecessary.

A paradigm shift in dGPU usage is bound to happen over time. But I don't think the really top end big dies will be replaced considering they hit die size limits. Some kind of QPI/Hyperthreading multi APU setup might eventually kill the dGPU completely but in 2020 most dGPU's will be gone. (just my expectation)

well, we know the GPU side is going to be decent->good because AMD makes pretty competitive GPUs.
but the CPU side.
im curious if it'll be trash or not and that is where they are staying quiet.

also, I get the feeling that an APU like this would prob be a BGA just so they could have more control over the circuitry of the board with the beast that this thing is bound to be size wise and requirement wise.

I still see the case for the massive > 500 sq mm GPU flagships with maximum compute and graphics performance. Nvidia is designing Pascal with NVLink to bring very high speed low latency communication between CPU and GPU. But the entry level 120 sq mm dGPU is definitely dead by 2020.

i think we will still see red vs green for some time now biggrin.gif

Did you look at the slides? It clearly says "transition from dGPU to SoC" and shows the merging of CPU and GPU segments into an APU only design. I just hope this design direction doesnt mean we wont be seeing many more dGPUs still on the consumer side of things.

Q: What's the difference between an AMD roadmap and a horoscope?

A horoscope has a better chance of coming true.
