Nice rig. 8) thumb.gif

alot of misinformation in this thread

op are you running at 1080p the 970 could be the cause of the frame drops?

could also be caused by parked cores

Except its not. With vsync off, he never gets close to 100% GPU utilization unless he runs a benchmark. He listed several different games this happens to in the OP.

= CPU bottleneck. See a few of these threads a week it seems.

alright then its the cheap 4 phase motherboard throttling his cpu :)

I would try blowing a fan over the vrm area of the motherboard

Id recommend upgrading to 5820k as both AM3+ and 1150 are basically at the end of the road socket 2011-3 is the best option and most future proof with direct x 12 coming and windows 10 an i7 is the way to go i wouldn't waste my time with i5 :)

Could be, but it is unlikely that the CPU is throttling in games where it won't even be close to using 100%.

If he prime95'd it then ya it would probably throttle.

No one is saying the i7-4790K is not a good upgrade. I'm fairly certain everyone is saying it is quite a good upgrade. I'm in the minority saying it's not necessary to get it over the i5-4690K. I am also in the minority saying that if it's worth wasting money on the extra processing power for the i7-4790K, then it's worth wasting a little more money on the i7-5820K.

You keep comparing your overclocked AMD processors to stock Intel processors and you prove absolutely nothing by doing so other than nothing you say makes sense.

From a pure gaming perspective, the i5-4690K is enough. If OP needs more than four cores/threads, then it's probably worth going with an i7-4790K; if OP doesn't need eight threads, then it isn't worth going with an i7. If OP doesn't need the extra threads and still wants the i7-4790K, that's perfectly fine. My entire argument has been necessity. There isn't a wrong answer between the unlocked i5 and i7 processors, it's just a matter of whether the extra threads are needed.

To answer the question of Ferenzee, if the games you play struggle to keep the framerate at an acceptable level for you, you need to weigh that against how much getting a new motherboard and CPU is going to cost you. I would suggest the 4690k with the GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 or ASRock Z97 Extreme4 board. Both are good picks.

As for the issue with the CPU never going above 60%, well that is because not all cores are able to be used. You also need to look at how much the application is using in task manager, not the total CPU usage. If you are using 50% for "Example Game", and 5% on an music player, and another 5% on a browser on your second monitor, the game is only using 50%, not 60%. That would also mean the game is only using four threads (quite well too).

Cleaned a bit
Lets keep this on topic going forward

That means I expect everyone to remember that the general belief that Intel is ALMOST always faster than anything AMD offers BUT is also more expensive has pretty much been proven to be true since SandyBridge
Outside of Price V Performance arguments and selected instruction sets and workloads AMD has not been able to compete(in terms of raw numbers, not necessarily user experience) on a desktop platform since the 955BE/965BE/1090T days(Which is a shame, I loved my 1090T sad-smiley-002.gif)

If this were a discussion of price v performance all this discussion would be fine, but the Thread title clearly states what the thread is about, and it is NOT about the merits of AMD v Intel
So lets address OPs issue and stop bickering about nonsense

I can say the z97x gaming 5 is awesome motherboard and can recommend it.

Thread Starter
Well, this thread got a little intense... I just want to say again that I went with a vii hero z97 asus board and the 4790k because I'm hoping to utilize the extra threads with dx12. X99 was never in the cards cause I simply didn't have the money to go the extra step (including selling what I already have) I wanted an upgrade, not a rebuild. Also, people say that amd is best bang per buck, but I have to disagree with that. I've had many problems with my amd build that I would never have had with Intel. When I first started this build I was convinced (by many internet threads) that Intel is simply overpriced, like when you buy a Harley Davidson, you're paying for a name. Convinced I was not going to regret my decision, I bought amd stuff and didnt look back, but knowing what I know now, I would have went with intel, even if they are more expensive. My grandfather had a saying, "buy the right thing the first time, only cry once and wipe your tears on your sleeve, buy the "good enough" version and you better bring some tissues, cause you're gonna soak that shirt" I wish I had some tissues after all the hell this build has given me.
