Gonna be running programs like Maya, 3DS Max, Nuke, etc.

Can I do this on the cheap and use a non-workstation PC, meaning non-Xeon proc, gaming GPU or is it better to build a workstation PC with Xeon proc and workstation GPU?

The obvious question is, why spend 5x more on workstation graphics like a W9100 or M6000 vs a GTX980 and R9 290X?
