[H.info] 17 CPU water coolers test: better than air cooling?

Better coolingperformance than air?

First of all we want to answer the question whether it's possible to get better coolingperformance with a watercooler than a good CPU-cooler. The answer is "yes", although the reality is a bit more nuanced. Below are the coolingresults of the watercoolers when placed on our Socket 2011 CPU-simulator with 160W of heatproduction with the models running "at full force". Added to that are the six best cooling aircoolers from our comparisontest a few months ago, recognized by the red beams. Mind you, none of these are cheap models.

Yeah maybe, but honestly, who cranks an LGA2011 CPU over two times above its normal TDP and expects air coolers to cope with that kind of heat?

It is more about heat density, imo.

Look at how stupid loud the AIO are. They should also do a test with similar fans.

Interesting, thanks OP. I wonder why they didn't test with a much higher wattage, rather then just stating that water will pull away with higher heat loads. A member here did a test with a Nepton 280l and a Phanteks PHTC14PE on an overclocked 4930k @4.5 1.32 V, his results were that with the same Yate Loon fans the Nepton 280l was only about 1 C better.

Would be very interesting to see someone put some 2000+ RPM fans on an NHD15 and test it on a 9590 for example vs a 240/280 CLC. I know its accepted wisdom that the 240 CLC cools better at higher heat loads I've just never seen anyone post anything in a fair test to show that its the same when you even up the fan RPM's, and a lot of tests dont really account for setting up the airflow properly.

I know they have the Thermalright IB-E Extreme with the 2500 TY fans, but seeing as the normal Silver arrow isn't to far off the Cryorig and NH-D15 in most tests I can remember I'm having a hard time believing it only came out a couple of C ahead of the other air coolers with fans at half the RPM.

Anyone know of any such test and can link me up? (Not Linus) tongue.gif

Cooler is cooler, PERIOD>

And they state they put the fans as MAX to test sound, this is not what they ran them at for temp testing.

They do indeed state that, interesting. I wouldnt have imagined the NHD15 would get anywhere near 50DBA myself, outside of a case close up, I suppose. Silver Arrow IB-E extreme does better then I would have thought, wonder what their results would have been at full whack on all coolers.

NHU14s 0.01 C off a D15 and H100i is king, who knew? teaching.gif
