How to OC 5820K to 4GHz ?

I may start to say sorry about a lot of questions here, but I want to do it right from the start smile.gif
Moving from a 4930K@4GHz to a 5820K I want to keep the same performance at least smile.gif
With my 4930K all I did was change multiplier to x40 and everything else on auto.
With the 5820K what kind of multiplier can I set before touching the Vcore ?

I would like to get 4GHz out of the cpu, and from I have read and heard 4GHz should be doable at 1.15vcore ?

When changing Vcore manually will it automatically adjust to the Mhz frequency ? I am interestet in power saving so when I don't need 4Ghz the cpu will downclock and then the vcore also reduces. Do I need to set something with offset or something. With the 4930K I never set the vcore manually since I didn't know how to make it drop when the cpu ran at lower Mhz.

As for cooling I am using a Phanteks ph-tc12dx air cooler with 2x120mm push/pull smile.gif

NB!! Please don't comment that the move from X79 to X99 is stupid - I already got the parts except the case (arrives monday) frown.gif I got my reasons and one is that I need more sata 3.0 ports than the two I currently have.

Reading reviews etc doesn't explain if the vcore will lower when the cpu is OC'ed and idles frown.gif

What usage will your cpu server? Gaming, rendering/encoding?

For the multiplier and voltage it depends on your cpu as they are all unique.

Vcore wont manually adjuct to the frequency unless you leave it to auto (in which the mobo takes over and seems to add way more than needed for me at least)

Coming from a folding perspective (where the cpu is running a simulation putting the CPU under full load 24/7) I could do 1.12v @ 4ghz before the system crashed 19-20 hours later. I'd need to do another run to see if it fails at that time length again. Probably wouldn't crash in just general usage or games. Think 1.1v or lower might be stable for games with some tweaking of the oc. But who knows wink.gif
Just raise the voltage incrementally from stock volts by no more than 25mV IMO watch your temps. Be sure to run some cpu stress tests during all this to make sure it stays stable (dont remember whats safe to use for haswell-e)

Vcore should be set to adaptive if you want it to run lower when in idle. If not on adaptive it stays as the chosen voltage 24/7 which would keep power/temps up, and put more wear on the cpu vs adaptive.

Thats all I have to offer. I'm sure someone better suited for this will pass by the thread, but thought I'd post my 2 cents since im current rolling a 5820K folder @4ghz for the time being.

I primarily game and use the PC for some video rendering and editing - no Folding etc smile.gif

Thank for making me aware of the Adaptive voltage mode ! I just found it in the manual for the motherboard. I wish this kind of setting was there with the X79 it would have made it much simpler for me to understand how to have set vcore manually and keep the voltage low in idle.

So basically for a 4GHz I'd do this:
1) Set per core multiplier to x40
2) Set CPU Core/Ring Voltage Mode to Adaptive Mode
3) Set vcore to 1.15v

As I understand it ? smile.gif

Yea I watched that too. The problem is that they use a fixed Vcore voltage, meaning that even if the CPU idles at 1200Mhz the vcore voltage will still be the same = more heat and more power is generated to no avail - I'd like to avoid that smile.gif

No need to go straight to that voltage. Yours could need less than that, meaning less power/heat. Just start off at like 1.0v and go up by +25mV until its stable for what you need.

I just went ahead and set the cpu to run 4.1GHz at 1.08v - I'm happy with that for now smile.gif
