Do we even have any firm info on Skylake-E yet? All I've been able to find is "2017"

late 2016 or early 2017 from some rumors going around, though its not solid.

as for anything further down skylake, cannonlake doesn't seem to have any info at all, and from previous rumors skylake is the end-road for DIY.
if what i heard is correct in that, cannonlake would only be present in NUCs and other BGA counterparts for desktop.

The E chips typically release a year after the "mainstream" quads, so yeah probably late 2016 to early 2017. Although Ivy-E did take 2 years to come out so there's that.

So Cannonlake could be Skylake's Broadwell? And what do you mean end-road for DIY?? I know Intel did consider making Skylake BGA on desktops, but gave up on that idea. Is that what you're referring to? A BGA-only world would suck indeed :/

This might have been asked already but when do you think DDR4 will become the standard ? I thought about upgrading to Skylake from my current rig but seeing how Skylake will do both DDR3 and 4 just seems like not a good idea. I've been reading some others people comments saying Skylake having support for both DRR3/4 is not good and should just wait till DDR4 is the only standard. Is there any merit to these negative comments ? Do we know for certain if Cannonlake will be a DDR4 only and if so do you think the DDR4 ram be cheaper by then ? Me personally I think it would better to wait till Cannonlake the DDR4 bugs will be worked out and only dedicated to DDR4. Please correct me if I'm wrong, which probably I am. Thanks

If they do this, how do you purchase a cpu? Are they dedicated to a MB? Or soldered to something else which is then socketed? Im confused lol

Soldered to the motherboard and/or only sold in devices.

This is why the reference to "end-road for DIY". A BGA only world would suck indeed. It seems unlikely at this point, in the near future.

I can still see CPUs being BGA only at some point though. They are cheaper, sockets and pins cost a lot more than a bunch of tiny balls of solder, especially as we are going to crazy pin counts. I wonder what the bent pin RMA rate is on LGA 2011 motherboards alone.

Really it still wouldn't be the end of the world for us, only that a blown motherboard would also mean a dead CPU or vice versa. There would probably be fewer enthusist motherboards too as each would have to come with different CPU options. tongue.gif

BGA will never happen maybe in All in one products but that it. Skylake is looking more of a side grade the only real upgrade is really x99 for a long time it seems

Isn't Skylake-E due 2016?
