An used i7 3770k would be cheapest upgrade.but why not find some tweaks for that game?

Is it really worth the upgrade for that extra performance in games like h1z1 and to help future proof for up and coming games?
edit: my 2500k has been oc'd to 4.5ghz also which runs games that don't max out the cpu really nicely

In those games, its not worth the upgrade. If you can squeeze out a couple more MHz (4.7-4.8) at safe temps, you might see a very slight increase but you won't be thrilled. A 4.7 SB is comparable to a 4.5 IB with diminishing returns going with newer CPUs above that. Those games are horribly unoptimized and run on a single core. Also, your GPU is fine. As mentioned above, wait for skylake, as it should be a more incremental jump from SB.

I wouldn't upgrade to even that. Plus you can only tweak an unoptimized game so much. I play arma3 daily with 4.5Ghz IB and still get crap performance in MP. In MP and editor, the game spazzes out with large numbers of players and objects/enemies. In SP, pretty good performance as its scripted efficiently. What the game needs is a complete overhaul, or you need a CPU clocked to the moon tongue.gif

On STed ,Higher IPC=Higher Performance,Higher Frequency=Higher performance aswell

He cant tweak the game.and get improvements but very minimal.where a higher ipc helps a bit more

But haswell would be the best choice for performance improvement

I understand your reasoning. As enthusiasts, we always strive for more. However, I can not recommend someone upgrade their CPU right this moment for an unoptimized game when their other game performance is great and a new processor (which hopefully is better) comes out later this year. He might see a slight improvement, but the OP won't be happy regardless dropping $325+ for an increase of under 8 fps and still be under 30 fps in these unoptimized games. I'd rather recommend he bump his clocks up and play on better scripted servers.tongue.gif

That being said, OP, the itch is yours to scratch. Whatever you select, you will need to overclock as much as possible, and you might still be disappointed.

if i could clock this cpu higher i would but it takes too much voltage after i pass 4.5ghz it is bad enough that i need 1.4 for this 4.5ghz

I think upgrading to an i7-3770K would be enough. The i7-4790K is obviously a better option, but I don't think the performance difference over the i7-3770K is worth the cost of a motherboard. On that note, I'm not sure if upgrading to an R9 290X is the right call with 300 series around the corner. I would at least wait until June to make that decision.

3770k is a heaping pile of thermal limiting crap

OP: 4790k + a 390x when it comes out.

I'm pretty sure any processor can be viewed as a "heaping pile of thermal limiting crap" but that doesn't change the fact that the i7-4790K is not ~$400 better than an i7-3770K.

the biggest issue i have for upgrading my cpu on this rig is that im having issues finding ram that will work with my motherboard they all make it bootloop frown.gif

I think I will wait until skylake is out and start a new build and retire my 2500k for folding and running my teamspeak server

I have a hard time believing that, unless he plays singleplayer only, 20fps is common in multiplayer no matter what your cpu is.
