current rig as follows

phenom ii x3 720 be Oc'd @ 3.7ghz
gigabyte ga-ma790fxt-ud5p
corsair vengeance 8 gb ram
hyper 212+ cooler
WD blue 1tb hdd
radeon hd 5870 ( yes its old)
antec solo gen 1 case yeah its old and heavy lmao.

my motherboard with current bios update supports the x4 phenom's and the next bios update supports x6 as well so those are my upgrade paths without changing out to fm2+ or am3+. i have no plans in upgrading to am3+ or fm2+ because nothing seems crazy groundbreaking esp if i jump into a x6. x4 is very enticing esp the 965 which im looking into.

i see the samsung evo 120gb ssd is on special i might get that today for my OS.

so my platform is old and so is my case but i still feel its capable since the next cpu's i have left on this platform are still capable. my reason for this post is because i feel like i need more hardware to keep up with the times. im stuck with usb 2.0 no 3.0 like am3+ etc.. no ssd so some recommendation is in order. as far as gpu at this point anything single card wise that can hang at 1080p gaming @ 60hz im game. reason i havent upgraded yet is because im in a crossroads of either waiting to see whats next for amd or saying screw it gtx 970 stat!!.

The x4 965 and the x6 seem to hang well with todays offerings of games. Hell if i wanted best right now for the money it would be intel but the phenom still has life. my upgrade to the next platform depends on which chipset amd plan to cater to the most. So far fm2+ seems like the likely candidate.

The crappy thing is that x6 chips sell for like $75-$100 still.

I'd buy a SSD and a R9 280 to liven things up until you can upgrade to a new platform.

I agree the x6 is holding a premium like crazy i mean thats a fx6300. Then again after a x6 there isnt much of a upgrade but maybe a 8350.

Yeah i been torn between the r9 280/285 or waiting on somethinf new from amd.

you are not worried by bottleneck, already some games have bottleneck with phenom cpus. and now you get a true hw bottleneck

yeah you might have a little bottleneck but its still a big leap from a 5870 i wouldn't be worried about it too much
