Sorry of the questions was asked already smile.gif I am reading through but it is a long thread.

Cheers

I have used my sm951 512GB nvme for over a year without heatsink. I have good airflow around the graphics cards, so no problems with temps smile.gif You loose warranty if you remove the sticker too tongue.gif

Coming back to my question. Anybody have something that he can recommend?

EDIT: I do not care about warranty smile.gif as you could have figured it out by me wanting to remove the stickers...

just recently I purchased an SM951, 128GB, AHCI version off Amazon. For the most part, I havn't necessarily had TOO much trouble (I honestly was expecting a little bit given bit given my motherboard and chipset), I had zero issues reinstalling Windows 8.1 onto it, and performance in benchmarking has been great, exactly as advertised. Heres a screenshot of my Crystaldisk scores:

However, ive had 2 issues of concern, perhaps they may not be directly attributed to the SM951, but id be hard pressed to think otherwise. The first is regarding temperatures with my CPU specifically. Now when I first got the SSD in and Windows reinstalled, I was having oddly slow boot times, the startup would hang on the Windows logo. However, I was able to fix this and now bootup is much faster, however, there is been a sudden dramatic rise in my CPU temperature! I know these SSDs run very hot, however my GPUs have not had any change in temperature at all. Can this be simply because of the integrated controller in the CPU working harder? would reducing the heat the SM951 is producing by, say, purchasing a PCIe M.2 card with a heatsink potentially help with this?

My 2nd issue is regarding PCI lanes. Im running my SM951 with the ASUS "Hyper x4 M.2" PCIe card thats included with the motherboard, and its in the PCIe x16_2 slot, with the GPUs occupying the x16_1 and x16_3 slots, as instructed by ASUS for 2 way SLI with my particular CPU.... however, despite my CPU posessing 40 lanes of bandwidth, the first GPU wants to run at x8.... ive tried what I can with the BIOS, and also what I can with NVIDIAs control panel settings, and it stays at x8 no matter what. Im sure im not the only one with this issue, can anyone shed some light on the matter?
Thanks in advance.

CLIFFS: -rather large increase in CPU temps since SM951 began working properly.
-problem with PCI lanes bandwidth, have a 40 lane CPU but first GPU is only running at 8x lanes even at full load

can anyone perhaps shed some light on these issues?

EDIT:- Errr. I should never post gone 1am, I thought it said PM951, my bad.

Had my lovely PM951 512GB NVMe up and running for about a week now, but still not fully using it as my main-main as yet (new Rainmeter layout and porting stuff off my 840 Evo). thumb.gif.
Spent like 4 days trying to get it setup up on Win7 in UEFI mode, only to find that one of my phone programs wasn't compatible with a GPT partition, so then spent a few more days customising my Win7 and getting it running nicely back on normal MBR, hahaha.

It's becoming my Main drive, so programs and a couple of games (GTAV and Skyrim), and my 512GB 840 EVO will be my main Games drive now. biggrin.gif

Seemingly lack of TRIM Support is a tad perplexing though, NVM(e)! tongue.gif

Go to a store like Home Depot. or even a nearby hardware store, and but a small strip of aluminum. While there get some teflon plumber's tape. Remove the label and tape the small strip of aluminum to the drive.

Thanks thumb.gif

Wish I read this thread before jumping on a $75 used SM951 128GB, thought I was getting a NVME drive and turns out to be just an AHCI redface.gif

Guess it will have to make do until I can source a SM961.

Edit, got it and installed. A big improvement over my 840 Pro in benchmarks. Any 128GB AHCI owner, benchmarks look normal?

What are you using to check the temperature of this drive?
OpenHardwareMonitor does not read it, does it have a temp diode?
Thanks...

HWinfo for example will work. Crystal mark as well.
