Why my GPU usage in GTA V is not reaching 98%?

Thread Starter
Hey, I've been playing GTA V, with almost all settings maxed out, as you can see in this video I recorded:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_guogVcXfMM

My GPU usage stays between 70~90% but not 98% like I have seen in others videos, my friend has an i7 4790k (same CPU as me) and 970, using these exactly same settings his GPU usage is 95~98% all the time, even when driving a car.

What do you guys think is the cause of that? I'm using 4.5Ghz and OS is Win 8.1 Pro, latest Nvidia driver also.

Thanks.

Does your friend get different FPS in the exact same situations? If the answer is yes, then there's a problem. If the answer is no, then there is no problem that is fixable within your control.

EDIT. just realized you are comparing 2 different GPU's.

He gets more usage, more FPS I don't know, I mean, he showed me a couple of screenshots using default grafx configuration (the one that comes default in the first time you open the game) and was showing all the screenshots having 95%+ GPU usage. He has the same CPU as me.

Like this one, he is using default graphics configuration, and has 95% GPU usage:

I've set the same default config and went to the same spot in the screenshot, and my usage was at 80%

Ya, but it's at LEAST 10% more powerful which is going to account for the differences. And unless he is exactly at 4.5GHz with the same uncore speed there will be more differences in GPU usage.

And unless you are comparing the exact same situation in game, with no differences in gameplay then you can't compare it either.

Sounds about right. There's no problem here.

But why his usage is better than mine? We both have the same processor, both using it at 4.5Ghz and 4.0Ghz cache frequency. The only difference is that he has an 970 and 16GB of RAM, I have an 980 Classified and 8GB of RAM.

Because, at the same location with the same settings you have a better GPU. This means less usage.

The reason your GPU is also not being pushed to 100% is because of how the game is coded. Essentially, your CPU is holding you back from getting the last %. Obviously there is nothing to upgrade to that will fix this, but this is just where CPU's are currently and you can't do anything about how a game is coded.

You can OC the CPU farther and get more usage if you want, otherwise just hope Rockstar releases some future patches that make it better.

Well, both of my titans are being used on average 89% each. That's 1600p with every setting possible on max @ 80fps. If the frames are good, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh now I understand, it's more a game problem than my hardware, I tried everything, like set prefer maximum performance in Nvidia Control Panel, also fixed my CPU clock at 4.5Ghz at 100% of the time and also raised the power target in MSI AB of my 980 to the maximum, but none of these things changed the usage. Also my game is installed on SSD, the usage someplaces and looking to some angles is good, and can maintain high usage while I'm walking, but when I get in a car and start to run my usage varies sometimes. I think that is normal... Anyway, thanks for the explanation thumb.gif

If I set everything to maximum, I have a rock solid 95~99% GPU usage, even driving in fast speeds.
