How much VRAM for 4k?

Been looking at some benchmarks and it seems at certain times that VRAM usage at 4k can go up to 8-10GB, I'm wondering if that much VRAM is actually necessary or if the VRAM just "overfills" and can adapt to a lower VRAM card. For instance, was wondering if the GTX Titan X with 12GB would have any tangible advantage over a similarly powerful card with 6GB or 8GB.

Few games can use above 4GB on 4k but in TPU review of the titan X they did a chart for usage in average but ther. Is no need for 12GB vram, amd cards with HBM will be faster than GDDR5
