I'm gonna throw in a very unpopular opinion... And many of you are not going to like it.

To all you people that claim ME2 had the best story, and claimed this is the best Mass Effect ever and overhyped it to heaven and back, and then to purgatory and back also, you're to blame for the forgettable main story of ME:A. Yes you.

Since it was the most praised game, even its weak ass non-existent story was infinitely praised as being the best of all of them, ME2 was chosen as the core for Andromeda. Yes. This game is ME2 at its core for basically everything. It's ME2 revamped to the current generation, with some added elements of the other games. It's the same story structure as ME2. It begins almost the same as ME2, except this time you don't die, but actually survive the fall to a planet. And rather than having the collectors being the unknown enemy, you have the Kett being the unknown enemy. Rather than gathering a team, you're gathering planets to colonize. Rather than having to make those team mates loyal, you have to make the planets viable for colonization, rather than upgrading the Normandy you upgrade the Nexus and so on. It additionally has the same design structure, meaning, segregated small stories everywhere, teleportations everywhere, not being able to board the ship without leaving the planet/station, and the overall arching plot is extremely weak, if not non-existent, and it does not flow, at all.
On the basic ME2 core of the game, they tried adding ME1 exploration elements which actually are more like Hammerhead missions on much larger maps full of fetch quests. At least the Nomad works well this time, but that's one of the few things that they actually tried improving from ME1. And lastly they expanded the ME3 combat, which also works well thankfully. But because the fundamentals are based on ME2, which is actually an extremely linear game, it fails at its core because this is now a big and non-linear game. It only really succeeds in the improved combat of ME3...

Disclaimer: None of the three games were perfect. What I do know is that ME1 had the best main plot, ME2 is the most overrated one, and ME3 the most underrated.

I partially agree.

Whereas ME1 and 3 were more central plot heavy, basically everything in ME2 was a scaffold to build up the characters. And those characters alone made the game quite enjoyable, IMHO.

It's lucky that Andromeda didn't go completely in that direction (it's more focused on Ryder and the various problems that pop up, relatively speaking), as it doesn't have the characters to pull that off.

I don't like ranking the games. They all do certain things well... They're different, not better or worse.

This is most likely the truth, and it is correct to say that ME2 is primarily about building a team and has far less story. Not that it makes a huge difference to me in these games, Mass Effect's universe is fundamentally flawed and the best story to come from the franchise is the cosmic horror-mystery from ME1. The universe and BioWare aren't really cut out for quality storytelling, so the best thing one can hope to get from ME:A is fun combat.
