I'm gonna make it short since nobody reads those long intros anymore. What games in the last 5 years have made such an impression on you that you would label them all time classics and go back to them over and over again ?
For me it was definitely Far Cry 3,it'll probably stay the best and the craziest game in my books for a long time, mainly because it was so different from everything I played before in every aspect. What classic game would you like to replay yourself if you had time and recommend it to other OCN members at the same time ?

  • 2010: Fallout: New Vegas, Mass Effect 2 (but everyone must play the first one beforehand, and then port that save over to ME2), Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Metro 2033 (although just go for the Redux version which has many improvements and came out in 2014)
  • 2011: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Deus Ex: Human Revolution (once again get the Director's Cut instead, which came out in 2013)
  • 2012: Mass Effect 3 (play the predecessors first and port your ME2 save over to ME3 before playing), Dishonored, The Walking Dead: Season One, XCOM: Enemy Unknown (Enemy Within is a necessity as it takes it to another level)
  • 2013: Metro: Last Light, Underhell
  • 2014: Dragon Age: Inquisition (I highly recommend playing its predecessors, especially Origins which is a less flawed game), The Walking Dead: Season Two, The Wolf Among Us
  • 2015: Tales from the Borderlands, Game of Thrones
I consider all of these to be modern classics.

You really need to check out Life is Strange. It's right up there with the Telltale titles, the end of episode 2 made my jaw drop. I'm eagerly awaiting ep 3.

Back on topic though, I find myself replaying these games the most:

Fallout 3
Skyrim
XCOM: Enemy Within
Dark Souls
Dark Souls II
Dragon's Dogma (console only)

That being said, I think there are far more titles that I would deem as "classics" or "modern-classics" that I have no intention of playing more than once, or twice at most like:

Bioshock 1 and Infinite (I think only infinite was in the last 5 years though)
Walking Dead
Life is Stange
Dreamfall Chapters
Wolf Among Us
Tales from the Borderlands
Borderlands 2
Dragon Age Inquisition
Portal 2
Mass Effect series (have played all 3 twice and as much as I loved every minute of it, I probably won't be going back for a few years at least)
Gods Will Be Watching
Tomb Raider
Murdered: Soul Suspect
This War of Mine
Castle in the Darkness
Assassin's Creed series
Alice: Madness Returns - It's sequal "Alice: Otherland" sounds like it has the potential to be awesome too.
Far Cry 3/4
GTA V

I may, though the general consensus seems to be that the writing of Life is Strange is pretty bad at times... and some of the examples I have been shown support said consensus.

It's not about the writing, it's about whats going on. You'll like it, your choices have MASSIVE consequences. My episodes 3-5 are going to be wildly different than most peoples because of what happened at the end of my ep 2. It's not as shallow as simply picking between two choices. I don't wanna spoil anything, but what happened at the end of episode 2 wasn't easy, and even trying my hardest to do the "right" thing, I failed because of my previous choices.

Battlefield 3 and 4...as much as I hated both the games I had over 2500 hours combined.

Life Is Strange.
Skyrim.
The Witcher 3.
GTA 5.

  • Demon's Souls
  • Dark Souls
  • Dark Souls II
  • Bloodborne
  • Ori and The Blind Forest
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • The Last of Us

Honorable mentions :

  • The Witcher 3
  • GTA V
  • Skyrim

The reason I didn't put Witcher 3, GTA V and Skyrim on the list is because I don't think I'll play them again due to the nature of them being open world and aging badly in an evinronment that is focused on the graphical nature of things. They are all great games and I think Witcher 3 is better than MGSV TPP. Witcher 3 is my personal GOTY, but I don't think I'll consider it a classic I will play again ever. MGS on the other hand is one piece of a huge series that people will play again and again. Maybe I am wrong about that because MGSV TPP is an open world game aswell as the 3 honorable mentions are.

It definitely differs from person to person. I am certain there are many people that have put well over 1000 hours into any of those 3 games and are continuing to do so.

Just want to reiterate Demon's Souls, Dark Souls I, and Dark souls II (even though DSII is the lesser of the 3 in my opinion).

I tend to be one of those people that enjoys skill based games so outside of those I would say Borderlands 2 was just a great deal of family fun, 3 generations of my family met up every night to shoot da bad guys down on that for hundreds of hours. Pre-sequel politics made me physically ill though.

Can't leave out Counter Strike: Global Offensive.. E-sport type game but I love it after Source really turned me off for a lot of years.

Might be kind of a cheat but I would Baldur's gate 1 and 2 count? I mean the remastered additions did come out a couple years ago. So that counts as "the last five years" right? By that logic super mario (from 1985) and all those NES/SNES final fantasies would count too. I still put it on the list though

The only games in the past few years that i'd actually replay over and over again and probably not bore of, is Fallout 3, Fallout NV, and GTA4/GTA5. Those games seem infinitely replayable to me.

Although, i haven't been playing nearly as many new games lately as i do old games. The gaming scene also seems to be flooded with stupid pre release indie titles that i just can't stand.
