i7 920 @4.0GHz vs 4790k - Is it worth the upgrade? - Page 7

seriously? Ive read a lot a lot about it and asked a lot of questions about it months ago... Everybody has told me NO it will not work regardless of the bios ( most up to date currently). No those wont work with out a mod bios. NO you need a different mobo. But now you guys are saying YES, I like your styles... Which xeon should I get then? Those i7 970s are looking around 200~ give or take currently

The X5675 seems like the one to buy since they are only $130-150 and can oc to ~4.6GHz 24/7 (your chip may vary).

On the other hand you can get a W3680/90 so you get an unlocked multi, basically just an i7 980x/990x with a better imc. They go for ~$200 usually.

I think those that told you otherwise are blindly looking at the motherboard specs and because they don't see Xeon's listed they are assuming it won't work... but it most likely will. I think the 2011ish Xeon's are cheaper because they are Server CPU's. Servers tend to get refreshed quicker than desktops, plus visualization is taking over in the server world, thus you have a lot of extra old (2010 -12) Xeon's on the market... Supply and demand , so they are cheaper. HOWEVER as people start to realize their benefits in the enthusiast market, I wouldn't be surprised if they run out, or price starts to rise quickly.

If I've learned anything, its to take advantage of deals while they last. thumb.gif

Yeah I could Run one of those...it's a great secret many don't know that the Xeons do work with a lot of boards.
Usually better chips/binning too...

X58/1366 is Still Powerful...may not be very efficient with that Power but Still....

I got the x5650.. strange problem.. when i oc to 4.4ghz @ 1.3v all I get is 4ghz when i run prime95 but bios shows 4.4ghz.. any ideas? I'm running all the EIST and stuff.. would that matter?

I managed to get 3.8ghz at 1.12v.... that's flipping disgusting.. runs @ 57degrees full load on air.. good recommendation guys.

I want to get 4.4 just to see how much more performance i would get.. but i think i'll stay with the 3.8ghz sweet spot.

oh killer, Thanks for that info, Yea I mean I did a lot of research on it and nothing told me any true, " you can use a xeon in a non xeon ready motherboard" I even asked my cousin which owns a PC shop, but hey, like you said, shouldn't matter, a LGA 1366 chip is a LGA 1366 chip is what your saying so I will definitely give it a whirl. So..... Found this gem. Just asked him if he'd take 115 shipped lol lets cross those fingers!
