They definitely get shady during the contact re-new time with the "oh that promotion expired" crap but come around pretty quickly after mentioning Cox thumb.gif Maybe I just got lucky, have been close to their hubs at both apartments

Had CL at my parents' place in the middle of nowhere midwest central Illinois all my life (even before CL bought out the local ISP. I live at the 3 mile mark of DSL viability, and still get 10mbs down/1mbs up consistently. Price is like 35 a month. Always has been, as far as I know. Of course, I haven't lived at my parents place in years, but I check up on the whole network from time to time whenever I go home for holidays etc.

Now I have Cox here in OKC and it's been the best net I've ever used. I get 150/20 for 85 a month and no bandwidth caps that they've ever enforced on me (used over 1tb in a month before!).

If you want to talk about bad ISPs...I lived in a town not far from my parents place years ago and they only had Frontier....Jesus it was so bad. 80 dollars a month for service that never stayed up - and when it was up, I got 8/.5 DSL. In a town of 100k. Comcast is all around us but not in this city. I recall in the early days that they forced me to have an active phone line in order to have dsl. So I paid 40 for an active phone line + 80 for their garbage net. I didn't realize that's what they were doing at first and when I started arguing with them over why I had to have an active phone line to have DSL they said DSL wouldn't work without the active phone line and I asked them if they even knew what DSL stood for, let alone how it works. I told them that I will no longer be paying for an active phone line in conjunction with my DSL and informed them that they were basically stealing money from people by telling them they were required to have an active phone line in order to have DSL. I hate Frontier so much. I know they were in collusion with the local government for getting kickbacks on telephone lines active in the city. It also explains why comcast was all around the city but never IN the city. Screw Frontier.

Cox can suck the short hairs off my... well this in itself should tell you how I feel about Cox.

But in case you want the skinny on those fools...

I lived in Kansas for 2 years and went to get internet so I could minimize my Sprint bill and so I could surf on my Laptop. Simple enough right? Not so fast. ATT didn't service my area so I am stuck with Cox. Went in to deal with them at a Cox outlet and they were nice enough chaps, looked up what it would be to get it started. Nothing but a $50 deposit. Wait a couple weeks and the bill will be there. Two weeks later I have NO internet because they cut me off. I go in and talk to the fellas an they be like "well sir your bill isn't paid and til it is you're off." An I told them to give me the price and I will pay it right now I want my connection back up... what d'yknow they want TWO freaking months up front on the first bill before I even get service but NOBODY tells me my first visit so I'm lookin like a crackhead who has crack but broke his pipe.

I was so peeved I told them that they could close my account, keep my deposit and I would be back in 10 minutes with their craptastic cable router. The nerve. They sound good and reasonable if you have someone to compete with them for your business. But as soon as they know you don't? Well that's when the wolf pounces. Never again will I give them my business. hmmsmiley02.gif

Horrible ISP is horrible. what kills me is you can get centurylink and cox in pretty much all of the same neighborhoods, so it's not like they're not competing in this market. the problem is both ISPs seem to be involved in zero actual competition, if not outright collusion, as they raise their prices in unison, provide equally atrocious service and likely share the same russian based call center so as to maximize profits.

what blows my mind is how centurylink, which on paper provides a fraction of the bandwidth and download speed, can survive as the MORE expensive option between the two in this market. Likely because Cox can't even provide watchable cable anywhere in the city, let alone a stable internet connection. Seriously, fries my mind. meanwhile centurylink gets bundled together with DirectTV out here, meaning they get a free install base without having to compete.

I'm between you two in Tempe and, where I'm at, Cox is the only game available. Other than a problem with the idiot contract installers they sent out when I first got the cable internet and phone installed (I eventually had to demand that they send their own people out to do things properly), I've had excellent, albeit expensive, service from them. Once I upgraded my router, modem, and Wi-Fi adapter earlier this year (I own my own equipment rather than rent it), I get 60Gbps down and 6 up pretty much all of the time.

Never had a problem with Cox in Glendale/Peoria. Fast and steady as ever, even with their provided modem. This holds true for my friends and family in Phoenix and Surprise as well.
