1080P and beyond

So I've really been pondering , a lot of us as pc gamers, won't go any further than our console overlords let us. Some even think the Witcher crew had sold out. Is there really any point in gaming beyond 1080p when consoles are still struggling to hit it at 60 fps with consistency? We have a block buster game releasing that cam be maxed with a decent 970 or definite 980. Another thread says that 8 gigs is plenty for this generation of gaming and the foreseeable future. Obviously games aren't been made with 4k textures either. I really think I'm going sell my 4k monitor and get a Ben Q 3D 1080P and be happy with flawless performance instead of buying 2 grand worth of video cards hoping to get good performance.

Depending how dx12 turns out, it could be a significant boost if programmers utilize it properly. And yes, you can push 1440p-4k with the right setup.

If you're doing Nvidia you need SLI'd Titan Blacks, 980s or a Titan X for 4k. 1440p can be done by a single Titan Black. 980s can pull it off but it depends on the game (most games are fine currently)

There are games with 4k textures or even higher but you don't need 4k textures. That's a waste of vram.

1440p, which looks substantially better than 1080p since it's a huge pixel quantity improvement, is easily feasible. You can max out most games at 1440p with good frame rates (60 FPS or close to it) with a GTX 780 Ti or R9 290X. Some exceptions include GTA V, Total War: Attila, Dragon Age: Inquisition, ArmA 3 under certain scenarios, and Skyrim with the absolute highest quality graphics mods. More exceptions will come, but with a GTX 980 or better (and AMD's R9 3xx cards on the way) you have some headroom. Note that I'm just talking about single GPU configuration.

As for 4k... unless you play a lot of older games, I would wait for GPUs to become more potent. Wait for next year's flagships. VRAM won't be a problem with the Titan X or R9 390X though. At the very least, go for a Titan X SLI setup or wait and consider an R9 390X CrossFire setup.

Well they do look better... so I think I will have to disagree with this. I don't need 4k textures for every single surface, but on large surfaces the difference is noticeable.

I run a 970 @ 1440p and no I'm not maxing everything but in most cases I am coming darn close. I play GTA IV on high/very high with 50+ fps

Playing a 6 year old game at sub 60 FPS isn't really an example I'd be using. I would use a more modern example as no one really plays GTA IV anymore, nor is it that demanding.

970 at 1440p should handle most games perfectly fine, the games Bored mentioned above will be the exceptions.
