3TB Toshiba USB 3.0 drive won't stay on

I just bought a Toshiba Canvio Desk 3TB drive, and I plugged it into a computer with Windows 8.1. It started up, and then it disappeared. I thought it had a duplicate drive letter, but Disk Management didn't see it. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, and it worked again for a moment before disappearing.

Then, I put Knoppix on a flash drive and booted a netbook with it. The hard drive was recognized, and I was able to copy 6GB of files from the laptop's hard drive onto the external drive. However, at 100%, the file transfer progress window locked up, then the file explorer locked up, and finally Knoppix froze.

I restarted the netbook, and now I have 6.7GB of files on the external hard drive. I'll see if this crashes again, but I have a feeling I'll need to go return the hard drive. Why am I experiencing this weird problem?

Hi there,

You should test the HDD with the manufacturer testing tool. Run all the available tests. If the drive passes you should test it with a different PC and a different cable. However that does look like it could be a bad unit. Don't trust it with important data until you have tested it and confirmed if it's properly working or not. Good luck

Stupid question maybe -- but are you using the external power supply with the drive, or relying on USB power? All 3.5" external drives require external power, but sometimes they will work solely on USB power. If yours came with a power brick - USE IT.

I took apart the drive, which I know is a bold move, and used the SATA to USB 3.0 adapter on a 2TB drive. It behaved exactly the same - no good. Then, I used that 2TB drive to back up data with a weird Samsung laptop's Samsung data backup utility, and it worked. I reformatted and then restored the data. All good.

I've installed different USB 3.0 controller drivers on my desktop to no improvement. There's another USB 3.0 controller I'm going to try out, and considering that I found it and have a spare 2TB drive, I'm going to consider returning the 3TB drive.

So, once the second USB 3.0 adapter is freed up from some other laptop backing up its files, I'll use it on the desktop that won't work with the Toshiba and see if there's any change in behavior. Thanks for the responses so far!

I returned the drive because my other adapter works very well. I used it to image a hard drive, and that worked just fine also. I Googled the hard drive enclosure, and the USB 3.0 board seems to have a good chip. This might be just one fluke, but I'd likely try again with this brand. I found out that the drive inside is a 3TB 7200 RPM drive with a 64MB cache.

Will they honor a warranty or return if you opened it?

Sorry I missed this! Toshiba may not have honored the warranty, but I returned it to the store where I had bought it and said that it doesn't stay on. They took the return with no questions asked.
