AMD Kaveri Refresh A10-7870K Apu arrives. - Page 50

Thread Starter

Hmm.

Why does my A10-7870K not turbocore to 4.1Ghz? even when running a stress test the cpu will only hit 3.890Ghz.

Also i have AMD 2400Mhz memory with CL11 timing , is this memory any good for these APUs?

Enable C6 State, APM and Turbo Core from the bios.
Thx for that, however I still can not get this thing to turbo core correctly.

My motherboard is an MSI A88XM Gaming (latest BIOS), and after reading much of this thread hated by all, and i can see why.

So C6 State and Turbo Core are enabled, but i can not find APM?

in normal windows usage, win 10x64, the CPU does turbo core, for the most part, but run any benchmark or stress test like Prime 95 and all 4 cores sit at 3890Mhz. As soon as you stop the stress test or the benchmark ends the CPU jumps between 1696Mhz & 4090Mhz, that is with Balanced as the power profile in windows.

also the voltages, cpu vcore hits 1.448V and cores hit 1.512V. I have actually put a -0300 offset and get it still seems high?

I don't get it?

Turbo Core is not available when all cores are stressed simultaneously. The CPU will hit 4.1GHz when you stress a single compute unit (two cores) at most, but it will operate at the base frequency (3.9GHz) when all cores are stressed. In Prime95 the frequency can drop below 3.9GHz too.

thx, makes sense now. will try turning turbo core off and setting the speed that i want. I dont want to overclock much so if it runs at 4.2Ghz i am happy. NB is already at 2200Mhz and the system feels very resp onsive that was until i added an Asus pcie WIFI card. Copying files off the network via the wifi, network card disabled, the machine got very very slow. I am also running 2x 128Gb SSD's in Raid 0 aswell.

Is there possibly a bus speed issue? Just not enough bandwidth or the NB at 2200Mhz just not a great idea?

Keep NB@2000MHz, very few samples can take more than that and keep stability. Anyway there's not much performance gain when OCing the NB on APUs.

i know that this thread is rather old now and that i am a bit late to the 7878k party, so thanks for the replies.

These APUs are very different to OC compared to the FX or INTEL chips.

In a previous post i talked about slow performance, that turned out to be ZoneAlarm. Once i took it off the system is nice and fast again and my benchmarks look to be spot on when compared to others i have seen on the net. I kinda like the little chip and its a shame i left it doing nothing for 6 months, my dad is going to get a nice new toy in a few days.

I am having a few issues getting the OC stable so am looking for a bit more help with this.

I have found that the NB at 2200Mhz actually has lower latency and slightly better memory read/writes so am going to try an keep it at this. i want the CPU to run at 4.0Ghz with a turbo core to 4.3Ghz with C6/cool n quite kicking in to drop the Ghz and voltage. The problem is i can not get it stable at all. prime95 or AIDA64 stability tests are fine, run 3dmark 2011 and the system hangs.

This BIOS only seems to work on + or - offsets on the core voltages?

cpu cooler is a be quiet Dark Rock 3
AMD DDR3 2400 cl11 memory
MSI A88XM GAMING

Sounds like a potential memory issue, lower the memory down to 2133 or 1866, sometimes the higher you go with memory speed and overclock the more unstable it gets. However overclocking CPU increase memory performance anyway.

I believe you are in fact overclocking 3 different things:
- CPU
- Memory (>2133Mhz on FM2+ is considered overclocking)
- Northbridge

My only advice for you would be : one at a time.
