8-core AMD CPU for gaming - good idea or waste of money? - Page 13

Let's see some MMO/Online Gaming Benchmarks/Performance with AMD then, and in some really intensive Area's....AMD will kinda want to Run/Hide xD

It doesn't matter if online or not, AMD will always have the same issue: that needs more cores to counterbalance the weaker IPC.

To make a rough example.

Let's say that 1 Intel core = 2 AMD cores.

If a game manages to load 100% 1 Intel core, it needs to 2 AMD cores do perform similarly. If the game isn't programmed to load 2 AMD cores, then the AMD will lag behind. How much behind? In a completely CPU-bound scenario, it will lag 50% behind. If the game can load 100% 2 Intel cores, it will need 4 AMD cores. And so on.

In intermediate cases, where the game can load say 75% an Intel core and only 1 AMD core, the AMD will lag behind, but less.

In cases, where the game becomes GPU-bound earlier, the lag will be even smaller or possibly null.

For example, in the new "Witcher" benchmark that someone posted, the FX 8350 finally manages to overcome the i3. Why? Because the game manages almost load 100% 4 FX cores. This load in the FX 8 core, is actually spread over 8 cores, so 4 FPUs are being used. So the FX 8 core, is running like a "super FX 4 core" and beats the i3. At higher levels, you see they all flat out at 99 fps. Because apparently at that point the game becomes completely GPU bound.

EDIT: This is the post with the benches:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1555753/8-core-amd-cpu-for-gaming-good-idea-or-waste-of-money/40#post_23925856

^ If the game was able to actually load 100% an FX6300, the i3 would take a harder beating. Because the i3 , must be already running at 100% capacity, when an FX4300 is running at 100% load. So when an FX6300 is at 100% load, the i3 has nothing more to give and will start losing. Fortunately, for Intel, games rarely do so nowdays.

Most mmos use like one/two heavily anyways, and better IPC/FPU IS the real deal....really in general not that much IS even Multi-threaded/core usage taken advantage of...It's how they run/program/code and the way better individual core performance/IPC shows itself every time xD
So in turn you will Lag/Hitch/frame drop in intensive rendered areas.. with AMDs Bulldozer/PD Architecture...believe me I have tried to remedy it...just no way around it, other than stupid high Overclock that I can't even do/get Stable... while yeah some games/tasks it's not that bad or even noticeable....while others it's really damn bad/aggravating....

Go into/around bunch others/towns/Cities really intensive area's etc then tell me how that 5ghz 8320/8350 is going to do xD
