$330 if you get the fx8350 instead.

The Intel i5 will run circles around the FX 8320 even at 5ghz when it comes to most games.

The FX 8350 @ 5ghz still has trouble beating a stock 2500k in most games. Let alone a faster Haswell i5.

Not even a competition. Unless you need multithread performance, don't get the FX CPU.

Quad cores will still remain kings of Video games for a few more years. The FX chips under performs when it comes to gaming. Saving $50 bucks at best is not worth it.

I've Owned Athlon XP, Athlon 64, Athlon x2, Phenom II, and a few other AMD chips. Even have built FX6300 rigs for people in the past.

But I honestly would never own a AMD FX 8 core. They are a waste of money in terms of gaming. I'm a AMD Fan, but even I can admit that this series is meh. Even AMD won't release newer versions of the Bulldozer arch, simply because it sucks.

A i5 4670k @ 4.4 ghz with 280x vs fx8 @ 4.5 with 290 should be same cost or even cheaper on the AMD

FX 8320 $130 (ridiculous but they drop to $99 about every 2 months)
970a-ud3p 8 phase vrm $75
Hyper 212+ $25 (it does 4.5 as i've proven on 3 different fx8 cpu)

So a AMD FX8 is still around $230

locked i5 $175
**** base board with 2 ram slots and 2 sata slots if you're lucky $40
stock intel hsf
$215

So you can have a locked i5 that will do just as well in games and much worse in multithreaded.

Its the same argument intel fans had over the e8400 vs the q6600. When "2 cores is all you need in games" Now a q6600 + 7950 destroys a e8400 + 290

Have you ever used a nicely tuned 8 core Vishera?

Here's the story again. I'm getting a new PSU as I have a 7 year old PSU with 22A on the 12v rail. Also, I'm getting a HDD upgrade as my HDD is old and making noise which will bring me around $230 which I don't mind. In the summer I'm going to watercool. Also I'm getting new 2400 MHz ram for the upgrade as my current MOBO only does 2GB per slot which 8 GB and can only run up to 1600 MHz. The reason I want to go AMD is that I don't like Intel because of how they crippled AMD in the past. I buy products that give me value and has a good history which is AMD. Also I want to DEVELOP for AMD since they are lagging behind in their software. I just want to try AMD also because I never owned AMD, it has always been Intel, so I want to give it a go. Also, I would never spend on a cheap motherboard as they are not reliable which is why I'm going for a 990FX killer which is a great MOBO. I see why the Intel i5 is better but I feel like if I OC the FX or develop a mini game and optimize it, I can see how well the FX does. Right now, I'm fixated on the FX 8320 or the 8370E. I do plan to CrossFire but that is when I get Zen and AMD R9 3XX card, if it does come. If not I can either survive with the FX if it can or I will settle with Intel's extreme platform. Right now, I'm getting a second hand upgrade; an upgrade that boots performance but at the same time costs less and I could tinker more with. Which is AMD!!!!!!!! Thank you guys for all your help. Which FX is the best to go with in the 8000 series or above? Also, will the 760 bottleneck like the Q9550 did or not at all or just a little? The Q9550 bottlenecks by 20-50 FPS but I have 4 sticks of ram if that does anything. I also play at 1080p resolution and play at either High/Ultra. I see the 760 with the 8350 and I see a huge boost from my Q9550 but not as much as the i5/i7. But still, AMD seems like a better choice don't you think?

Thanks and sorry for the long reply. lol, I just went outside and I came back and 3-4 more pages of posts. biggrin.gif
If you buy an 83x0E and overclock it, you're going to have a pretty good system that won't bottleneck your 760. The only issue is that if you've already made up your mind that you're going to get Zen when it comes out, you're wasting a ton of money. Your AM3+ board won't work with Zen, and your new DDR3-2400 will probably work sub-optimally, even if Zen does have controllers for both DDR3 and DDR4.

A Vishera at 4.5 GHz is going to be a massive improvement over your Core 2 Quad. But if you could find a decent 775 board that allows you to overclock, that Q9550 could likely make it to 4 GHz on its own, and at 4 GHz, it's not going to be tremendously off the pace of the Vishera on anything that uses four cores or less. Not quite as fast, but good enough to last until Zen at least, and a lot cheaper.

But if you don't mind wasting a few hundred bucks for a placeholder to last a year or so, then the Vishera and 990FX Killer will do the job fine.

just my 2 cents but why would you want to put and 8320 or an 8350 for that matter in a cheap mb, you're asking for headaches..shoot if he just going to "program/develop" might as well go with the 6300 and oc around the 4.5 area and a semi decent mb..ya he's giving up 2 cores..

Okay, by developing for AMD, I mean optimize it. I know it sounds crazy but in this day and age, everything's crazy. Also, I may think about getting a P45 chipset MOBO off of ebay for $120 to upgrade my MOBO and OC it to 4 GHz. Will that make my bottleneck go away or no?

.... for $120 you can get a 2500K and for another $50 you can combo it with a P67 or Z68 motherboard. I see 2500K and mobo combos all the time on Reddit hardwareswap sell in the $150-$160 range.

$120 for that old of a motherboard is a complete waste of money.

iinversion can not understand the cost comparison I did with a fx8 + 290 vs i5 + 280x but he can recommend 2500k all day long and claim $120 when they go for more and are 5+ years old used chips

Dude, we've had this conversation before. Remember? You asked me to show you where to find them for that price and I showed you at least 3 links where you could get a 2500K and a motherboard combo for that price, at the time.

You keep comparing your 280x to a 290 but we both know the FX and the Haswell i5 cost the same. You need a CPU cooler for the FX and if you buy it at a normal retail price instead of using a $80 one time sale event as a price point, then they are the same price and often times the i5 is even cheaper since you have to factor in a CPU cooler for the FX.

You also didn't compare ANY of the CPU bound games, and if you did the i5 would LEAD even FARTHER than what it did in your 290 vs 290 test. Your 290 vs 290 test just shows everyone the i5 is better than your 83xx chip at 4.5GHz for the same price anyway despite being only a few select titles.

You just blow all logical thought out the window.

Whilst a bargain, the problem with these options is the OP won't get brand new hardware with manufacturer warranty.

If anything ends up faulty it goes in the bin.

OP if you already have a cpu cooler then an 8320E and cheapish 8 phase board could work well.

If you don't have a cooler then the price is going to increase on that 'cheap' FX option.

I only mentioned it because he brought up buying a better 775 motherboard for $120 on eBay. I was simply pointing out that if he was going to buy anything used there were much better options for the amount of money they are asking for that motherboard on eBay.
