I missed that and agree no point pouring money into that old socket.

Okay. So 775 is a no go and 8320E is a yes. Also, will it last me a year better than my Q9550 or the same. Also, are there games that run AMD better than Intel i5/i7?

No, at best there are some games where they run the same.

you dont need a darn 8 core to have fun

Find the cheapest motherboard that officially supports an 8350. BOOM you have your power support.

toss out the idea of going 8350. The idea behind finding a board that supports 8350, is that the board will have fairly strong VRMs already if it gets away with officially listing its support.

Buy a FX4300 quadcore like what I currently have (currently at 4.6GHz with a mild overvolt of 1.43v) or a FX6300

I suggest the 6 core if intending on keeping the system for the next 2 or more years.

I have zero performance issues. Everything feels zippy and strong. My 5770 graphics card is a MAJOR bottleneck in my games. Hence why Im saving up for a nice 960, 970, or possibly a 280x from amd.

this FX4300 absolutely destroys my old 1035T 6 core. I have right around 30% more PPD on folding@home, and Im 4cores versus the old 6cores

Funny because all benchmarks that ever existed show the PII X6 on par with 83xx chips in both single thread and multi-thread when clocked appropriately.

6 true cores vs 2 modules. There is no way the 2 module part would be better in anything unless it had a severe clock advantage.

This is also the worst advice ever. Some 3+1 phase boards officially support 83xx chips and you would be stupid to run that on a 3+1 phase.

That's why it's possibly a better option just to buy a locked i5 and B85 board.

Don't need a cooler, don't need an expensive board (no risk of throttling)

price would be similar to the FX/mobo/cooler option and you'll have superior ipc.

The only issue is that if you've already made up your mind that you're going to get Zen when it comes out, you're wasting a ton of money. Your AM3+ board won't work with Zen, and your new DDR3-2400 will probably work sub-optimally, even if Zen does have controllers for both DDR3 and DDR4.

A Vishera at 4.5 GHz is going to be a massive improvement over your Core 2 Quad. But if you could find a decent 775 board that allows you to overclock, that Q9550 could likely make it to 4 GHz on its own, and at 4 GHz, it's not going to be tremendously off the pace of the Vishera on anything that uses four cores or less. Not quite as fast, but good enough to last until Zen at least, and a lot cheaper.

But if you don't mind wasting a few hundred bucks for a placeholder to last a year or so, then the Vishera and 990FX Killer will do the job fine.

JSC sums it up perfectly here. You might also look into just getting a 771 Xeon, and calling it a day. Better to get a 5+ year old CPU, than a 5+ year old mobo.

Yes, it would, but don't spend more than $50 on a motherboard that ancient.

Could get a better mobo on the i5, but not necessary. Even if you upgraded to H97 the prices would still be very close and not cheap enough to make the FX a better option for gaming.
