Its quite tricky to say whats better in this situation, the i3 4130 is a massive upgrade even compared to the c2q and matches AMD's offerings, it will suffer in things that rely on moar cores though

AMD's platform will be dead, Intels platform will be dead, and the platform you are on is already dead.

You could get a laptop with better performance that will be by your side for a while if you are waiting for zen, or you could build a cheap intel and be happy for a while.

Personally... or it may be because of UK prices, i dont think AMD offer price / performance currently due to the motherboards costing more for the most part even though the CPU's are cheap.

The MOBO I'm getting is $190 and is $30 more than the CPU since it's on sale. A cheap intel build would be a $300 i5 (Canada + Ontario Tax) and a good mobo would be $180 + tax which puts it overboard for 1 year, don't you think? Laptops cost too much, especially if it's a i7 4900MQ with 780m.

if they can utilize all threads of the 8320/8350 then that would gain you more performance especially with a healthy overclock. That would require an adequate motherboard and a clean power delivery system. Both can be had for a favorable price if you keep your ear to the ground.

1600Mhz RAM should help quite a bit now as well, it will relieve some overhead from your CPU

I'm thinking of getting 2400 MHz ram since it costs the same as 1600 MHz ram. Also it's a CAS 10 so it should be good. I know that the AMD CPU can only handle up to 1866 MHz but I can set it to the RAM speed since the MOBO handles 2450 MHz OC. Then I will try to develop applications and games optimized for AMD because for once I can see if AMD has the power. I'm pretty sure their CMT design is a flop but if optimized correctly, it could be better, don't you think. I know they tried to go the more GHz and cores thing but optimize it for 8 cores and more GHz, and you got yourself a great CPU for the price. biggrin.gif

Heck my laptop contends with 8320 in a lot of scenarios

I have an i7 3610 with a 7850M - while it's a good laptop, it's no where near as pleasant to use as the 8 core Vishera's are.

I was able to get 4.3 ghz ( prime 95 )with an 8320 with the GD-65 on a stock cooler . Most Vishera chips will hit 4.7 easily with decent cooling etc., and other than a hand full of outdated games ( ARMA 3 is the ONLY one that I've tried that gave disappointingly low fps), at 1080 resolution I really can't see a difference between it and a 4790k locked at 4.4ghz. http://www.overclock.net/t/1534128/vishera-vs-devils-canyon-a-casual-comparison-by-an-average-user.

Thanks, I made up my mind after a year of research, AMD 8320 FTW. I was originally supposed to upgrade to i7 last year since I got my GTX 760 last year but I waited and I feel like I did the right thing. biggrin.gif
