It depends on what you wanted to do with the CPU. If it's for gaming, the Cyrix MII series of the late 1990s and early 2000s was infinitely worse. They had better ALU performance at the same clock than Pentium II and AMD K6-2, but they had an FPU that was literally based on old 386 technology. They were great for office work, but horrible for gaming, and a lot of people bought them based on flawed benchmarks back in the day and got seriously burned.

Some of my early days in tinkering with computers and helping others were spent in upgrading MII-based systems to K6-2+ 450 processors when they became available. Not great FPU performance there, but massively better than the Cyrix, and you could OC them to 600 as a matter of routine.

As sucktastic as the Pentium 4 was, once devs started getting the hang of SSE2 (something Intel encouraged by spending massive amounts of money to provide the right compilers), it was a viable platform once you overclocked it--or factory overclocked it, as Intel often did in Netburst's dying days. I don't miss Netburst CPU's, and I won't miss AMD K15h when it's retired, either.

I'm pretty sure a Sandy Bridge Celeron or even a lowly Athlon II X2 would have the same experience in the desktop. Opening control panel or bringing up my computer are not exactly things that you need a 5GHz CPU to do quickly and fluidly.

So since all fact goes against you and your FX claims, you decide to come up with some nonsense about how the desktop experience is better despite being a worse CPU.

Yup. Ahhh.....AMD. I doubted it many times in one whole year or well over a year. The 8350 was my first choice since I didn't know anything about proceesors, thinking that an 8 core processor for $250, what a bargain. Then I read reviews about it and they said 4 modules and the i7 is better. So I went to i7 but realized I didn't need it, then went i5 but no HT and I got into modelling and devolpment. So, again I switched to thinking about upgrading to i7 extreme and this was december 2014. 'Til may, I realized I would give AMD a go since I asked on forums and said to go for it. Now I'm stuck on 8320 or i7 extreme. If I get the 8320, I would upgrade within a year or 2. If intel extreme, then I don't even have to think about it. But @miklkit is right, its not worth the extra price, also DDR4 is too much now. So I'm down to AMD FX 8320 or i5 but I want to give AMD a try so 8320 it is. That's the story folks.

If you are doing 3D modeling the FX will be better than the stock i5.

If you are doing gaming the i5 will be better.

If you are doing either the i7 will be better.

Since you are going to upgrade in a year I don't see why you would shell out for AMD now only to upgrade so soon again. DDR4 prices have actually came WAY down and are only about an additional $50 for a 2400 kit nowadays. I honestly don't see the point of the 4790K on 1150 in terms of bang/buck. It's not much more for X99.

You either go Xeon 1231v3 and 1150 or you make the jump to X99.

Between your two options. i5 and AMD, this isnt a terrible choice... but you said you would upgrade to Zen next year if you went AMD. If you have the money to spend right now then it should be i7 quad or hex no doubt and you wont have to upgrade for quite some time.

If youre set on an FX 8320 it will be a little bit of an upgrade from what youre currently using though.

Yea, Im overthinking this decision which should have been solved a long time ago. Im going for what my mind tells me too, Im going intel, easy choice. 5820k, X99 and ddr4. Why the hell not? Changed my mind quick but my mind when not overthinking is intel. Thanks. 5820k, yes? But really though, I feel like its a waste of money.
