My question would be how is this different from AMD paying EA/DICE to add Mantle to BF3 & other EA games?
Don't have the hardware to run it? turn it off.

If it's not open for all to use we shouldn't do it? These things that companies introduce are not free to create. To some extent we have to realize we don't live in a utopian society and yes I think we have to be cognizant of the fact that they all trying to maximize profits. However getting rid of all new technologies because they lock you into one vendor is absurd for progress.

The first I've heard of HairWorks is in connection with Witcher 3. Can someone give me an unbiased* technical description of why another hair/fur API was required, and why it is a proprietary API?

I may not have the complete picture here. If you turn off the gameworks features the game still takes a hit to performance on AMD hardware because of it?

Directly no, but is it unreasonable to assume that because DICE spent time working in an extra API on a tight deadline that BF4 released in the state that it did?

Who said anything about getting rid of all of them? You do realize that the majority of them are open to any vendor right? The majority of innovation happens OUTSIDE of proprietary cookie cutter tools that cause just as many problems as they solve.

I'd claim that the closed tech developed by one company progress much faster than open standards. The detriment being that you are dependent on that one company. DX vs Opengl, flash vs now html5. Specifically to graphics all of the ones I listed effectively locked you into a vendor for a period of time. If you disagree then I don't think I can convince you otherwise.

I think, and know to a certain extent, that dx12 and vulkan development schedules were shortened as a response to Mantle.

On the contrary. It would incentivize AMD products and make them more competitive. Even when AMD ran huge promotions like Never Settle Nvidia held the majority marketshare IIRC, so clearly AMD needs an extra incentive. AMD needs to put more work and money into proprietary software and exclusive features and also into developer relations. I think it is necessary for AMD to compete.

If AMD ever had proof of their claims, then they would be in court for antitrust and win.

Instead, they sling mud. Even the hardiest AMD fans are beginning to see that.

It would be nice if Nvidia sued AMD for slander, just to get them to stop misleading people.

Its one thing to want GameWorks open source, its another to spread outright lies. There are legitimate concerns about how GW works, which could be discussed to the betterment of everyone but when AMD go as far as claiming it's "Evil" is outright immature, and feeding base fears. AMD is the new Fox news.
