This was exactly what happened with nvidia+tomb raider. It took nvidia more than a month to optimise for it.
For some reason I didn't see any out cry why AMD and the developer did this to nvidia.

Was never an alcoholic, but did have the typical college binge drinking episodes. After getting dumped in a cab during my department's annual party and having the worst hangover I've experienced in my life, I pretty much quit drinking.

No need to tell me about the dangers of acetaldehyde, I work with stuff waaaaaaaaaaaay more dangerous than that on a daily basis. Perks of a chemist thumb.gif

Mantle was "said" to be future supported by others. AMD said they "will" make it open.
But after 2 years and something, it was closed to AMD GPUs only with any hints of being open what-so-ever. That is until DX12 showed how useless mantle is.

Just to note the esophagus is not something that be disected out on a daily basis, or any day actually: the risk is like some number devided by zero.

Alright look, I have a 100 gram bottle of potassium cyanide sitting comfortably at my bench, along with some super nasty methylating agents that will kill me dead if I so much as get a good whiff. I also use solvents like chloroform and toluene on a daily basis. Hell I have a 100mL bottle of 99% pure acetaldehyde in my lab fridge that I use from time to time, and the last time I caught a small whiff of it I got a headache for several hours. So trust me when I say acetaldehyde exposure through alcohol consumption is the least of my worries.

Now let's please get back on topic.

The difference with TressFX is that it is OpenCL-based, so that was why any other hardware vendor could optimise for it. Have you worked with Gameworks before? That sounds like such an authoritative statement that you must surely be a developer in the know. Gameworks is a set of libraries that you can insert into a game to give you basic functionality like proper light effects and somewhat realistic water. Optimising for it isn't impossible, because IIRC in Watch Dogs HBAO+ worked just fine on AMD systems. Nvidia's implementation of HBAO+ even improved performance on Radeon GPUs for free.

Even if you don't have the source code available to you, one can still optimise drivers to improve performance. Both Nvidia and AMD have decades of software tricks that they have amassed through fixing stuff in games in their drivers that was fundamentally broken to begin with. AMD can't see the source, but they have experience with analysing binary code to guess what thing does what. Nvidia and AMD rarely get to see the source code of a game - game engines, yes, as well as APIs like DX12, but not the games themselves. 

 

Similarly, AMD can't ever match Nvidia's performance when it comes to tesselation because that's not what their architecture is geared for. They are concentrating more on OpenCL and shader performance instead, while Nvidia concentrates more on geometry performance and further optimising for CUDA. In fact, the Titan X is a hint of what's to come from Nvidia in the future - less focus on FP64 performance, more performance allocated to FP32 math and more resources dedicated to OpenCL-driven workloads like machine learning.

No it cannot be. There is zero, none, 0, nada GPU based PhysX in project CARS.

It's not a debate the facts on the reddit post were blatantly incorrect and there's no way that you can just say "well some of it can be put on the GPU anyway" and be correct. No that's just utterly false. NV and AMD run exactly the same 100% CPU PhysX in project CARS.
