Is my CPU holding me back? Phenom x4 970 BE vs R9 280X BE @ 1440p?

Thread Starter
My rig has an OC'd Phenom X4 970 at 3.9ghz. I recently got a R9 280X BE and a 1440p display and I plan on playing Witcher 3 on it. Is a CPU upgrade worth it, maybe a 8350? My motherboard supports up to AM3+ processors. I'd appreciate advice and CPU upgrade recommendations. Thanks!

I've had the exact same setup before, and my 965 @ 4.0 + OC'd 7950 + 1440p screen was just fine in the games I played. Don't even think about a CPU upgrade until you try the Witcher 3... If it's unsatisfactory, come back here smile.gif

GTA V is the only game I can think of that would give you a considerable boost with an FX8350 compared to the phenom.
Other games will probably only have 1-2 fps difference.

I agree with brucethemoose and test witcher 3 first or at least wait until witcher 3 cpu benchmarks are out.

Yeah i'd say you have a bottleneck there no matter how much I overclocked my Phenom 955 it would not go with my 7950. I guess you could upgrade now or wait for the new stuff next year.

If you're at 4.1 on the Phenom, there's not much you can upgrade to that will help your gaming performance, unless Witcher 3 or something else you want to play can effectively use more than four threads. You can get an octocore Vishera and overclock it to 4.8 or more on your motherboard (I did it myself), but in gaming, you'll rarely use the extra cores, and Phenom II still has slightly higher IPC than Vishera. You'll gain maybe 10 percent performance from a max overclock on an 83x0. You'll also need a better cooler. The Hyper 212 family can't properly cool these chips beyond about 4.5.

i used to run a 970 Oc'ed to hell and a 7950 and it bottlenecked hard in DX9 and 10, until dx12 yes you are being held back. even my 8120 at 4.2ghz holds my 7950 back.

As already mentioned it is not worth upgrading to a 83xx chip because you will not see much of a boost. Phenom II has higher IPC as it is, so a max overclocked 83xx chip would yield around 10% boost compared to a 4GHz Phenom II & you would also require a better CPU cooler further increasing the cost.

An actual upgrade would require you to switch to an Intel platform.

I found that my 8320e even at 5ghz was a joke compared to my old 1090t thuban @ 4.4ghz. The only real upgrade would be 2600k or better. My 3570k@4.8 walks all over my 8320e in gaming. Can't wait for Zen to come if it really gains 40% ipc over PD. I would try to get some higher clocks from your phenom II.

Yes, it is. i5 2nd gen or better is essentially needed to not bottleneck any high or mid range GPUs since its release. Generally speaking.
