Temperatures jumping around like crazy.

Thread Starter
I just installed a Cryorig R1 using the paste that came with it. I have not overclocked yet and I'm currently sitting at idle. Temperatures seem better than my previous cooler but I notice these odd jumps. For example, core 1 goes from 27 to 32 in a second than goes back to 27. Is this the burning in process are is something wrong with my installation?

This is normal, and not something to spend much time thinking about. What are your load temps?

I did a short prime95 test and temps were not what I expected. Mid 50's on a stock 3570k in a relatively cold room. I guess I'll take the heatsink off again and see how looks. Figure I just ****ed up the installation.

Don't forget to look at the Vcore voltage that's used while you are judging a temperature. That matters most, more than the CPU running at 3.8GHz or whatever as opposed to for example 4.5GHz.

Cleaned CPU/Heastink, applied new paste and reseated heastink. Temps have gone down a couple degrees. Temperatures still jump around a bit though but because of what Deepor said I also noticed my voltages jumping around from 0.936 to 1.171. I guess that's why the temps jump.

they are never the same for each core - when you get a substantial difference, then worry thumb.gif
post #7 of 12
Indeed.
Each time a core does some bit of work it draws more voltage and creates more heat.
Here is what mine is doing right now. I know it's not varying as much as yours, but only raches 50c @ 100% load. thumb.gif

Im taking a dive in the world of overclocking again. My chip seeps to be rrally voltage hungry so I got to 4.2 with 1.2v. How big off a temp difference can I expect between different cores? Currenyly I have 59, 67, 68, 63 after 20 mins of prime.

Not even sure if this js supposed to be good for an R1 but than again I dont really have an airflow optimized case either.

1.22 ish volts is what mine takes for 4.2 rock solid, your temps are about the same as mine at that voltage IIRC

With a 3570k when stress testing 8-10 C from coldest to hottest core is pretty normal. Annoying that you can't get them all to the temp of the coolest but thats just how it is with these chips. I've remounted several times and used 2 different coolers and had the same results.

Mine right now running Prime 95 small FFTS: 1.32V 4.4 GHZ for reference.

I guess im alright then as I have the same pattern as you. Core 2 and 3 being the same, core 4 a couple degrees below 2 and 3, and core 1 being a couple degrees below 4.
