I need HDMI GPU solution for three WQHD monitors

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
I have three LG 34UC97-S ultrawide (3440x1440) monitors. They only have a single display port each which I'm already using for a 2nd gaming system. That leaves me with 2 thunderbolt and 2 HDMI (1.4a) ports per monitor for my workstation rig that will only be running desktop applications. The most demanding thing it will need to do graphically is play a youtube clip if I get bored. biggrin.gif

I'm unable to find a single card solution that supports 3 HDMI ports natively. So my next option is a pair of Dual HDMI port GPUs like this Sapphire Radeon R7 240 2GB card.

But getting the needed specs of this card is proving difficult. Can I run two of them in my PC? I don't need crossfire but I do need two of them to coexist. Will it support 3440x1440 resolution per port?

I've asked Sapphire's tech support via email for this information but I've not heard back yet.

If anyone knows of another solution, that won't break the bank, or has more information regarding this particular Sapphire card I'm considering. I'd be appreciative.

Thanks for reading my thread. thumb.gif

fyi, the Radeon cards will only support eyefinity if one of the ports used is DP. beyond that, i'm not sure what to tell you. I'll be keeping an eye on this myself. it's an interesting issue.

Would an DL adapter support the needed 3440x1440 resolution though? I've attempted to use active adapters before with less than stellar results.

When I purchased the monitors I didn't think the lack of DL-DVI ports would be an issue... guess I was wrong. redface.gif

Thanks for the responses guys. smile.gif

Thunderbolt = Mini-DP

You can get some Mini-DP to DP cables, and plug the DP end into your workstation, and the Mini-DP end into the LG monitor.

Greg

Edit: This might not work. I know on laptops with thunderbolt outputs you can plug them into DP monitors via Mini-DP to DP cabling, but not 100% sure on the LG. The documentation is a bit ambiguous on the subject. It certainly won't hurt to try, the plug is pin-for-pin compatible with Mini-DP. Worst thing that would happen is it won't work.

Thanks for your response Greg.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but all my research tells me you can run a thunderbolt video card into a displayport monitor but not the other way around which is what I would need.

HDMI, as a general rule, can run 1440p at 60hz, or 4k at 30hz.

Yes you can run multiple GPUs of the same class (EG, GCN) in the same computer with the same drivers even if they are not in crossfire.
Yes you can run multiple GPUs with each of them doing video out. The other display outs are not disabled unless you enable crossfire.
Yes you can get 2 of the cards you linked and use them, it'll work.

Also could try with MiniDP for "Thunderbolt", as it is Windows compatable, per LG's site;

In regard to Thunderbolt I believe some clarification is needed. The Thunderbolt and Displayport sockets are the same but the technology is not.

See this CNET Article as one example of several sources I've found that state that that you can plug a Thunderbolt source into a DP monitor but not the reverse.

So for this reason I'm looking for an HDMI solution.

Then I would aim for the FLEX card with DVI -> HDMI. Else your solution should work as well.

I've used my DVI to HDMI cable for my 4k TV. I didn't notice really any loss honestly. It's preferred to use the DP/HDMI though. We have guys at work with 6 monitors and they have multiple display ports on them. We use DP to DVI adapters for that. Not ideal, but we have 1x Workstation graphics card per machine. Works great for work, but not so much for any performance gaming of any kind.
