[TechPowerUP] Noctua Presents Two Asymmetrical 140mm CPU Coolers

Noctua today announced two new additions to its portfolio of premium-quality, quiet CPU coolers with 140mm fans. Whereas the NH-D15S is a high-compatibility single fan version of the elite-class dual tower model NH-D15, the NH-C14S replaces the proven top-flow cooler NH-C14. Both the NH-D15S and NH-C14S feature an asymmetrical layout in order to avoid blocking the top PCIe slot.
Quote:
"140mm coolers have become the default choice for enthusiasts who seek superior cooling performance for overclocking or near-silent operation, but these tend to block the top PCIe slot on many current motherboards," says Mag. Roland Mossig (Noctua CEO). "With the NH-D15S and NH-C14S, we've updated our successful 140mm dual tower and top-flow coolers with asymmetrical layouts that ensure the best PCIe compatibility."
Quote:
Prices and availability
The NH-C14S is currently shipping and will be available shortly. The NH-D15S will ship in June. The manufacturer's suggested retail prices are as follows:
NH-C14S: EUR 74.90 / USD 74.90
NH-D15S: EUR 79.90 / USD 79.90

i have a question, on the first cooler in the second picture, isn't some airflow being wasted because the fan is bigger than the towers?

i, uh, don't think "wasted airflow" is a thing

Heatpipes are still being cooled from the fan blowing on them, also, that patch of dead zone actually gets some air circulation. At this point I'll just believe whatever noctua says as gospel lol. If they say 2-5c cooler, i won't question it haha. (ok maybe).

I have X99 build with NH-D15 (bought it only a few months ago) and first PCIE slot is too close to cooler. D15S is exactly what i needed, but Noctua took their sweet time with this update and now I'm stuck with regular D15 frown.gif

Probably it was better for them to reduce clutter close to the socket, and leaving some fins out.
Mounting those things is complicated for most users, and having better clearances helps - along perhaps with DIMM socket clearances for those oversized heat-spreaders that "are so important".

My Silver Arrow SB-E was practically touching the GPU - that's more like the 150mm center fan was - along with the side panel too! Worked fine, I would not call the NH-D15 something you are "stuck" with, it is an amazing cooler and comes with a price - its huge.

I don't know too much about air towers, but it was my understanding that some of the towers weren't able to be used with RAM that has heat sinks, correct? Think that might be alleviated with the new versions?

I didn't mean it's a bad cooler, it's great, but it makes my first PCIE slot almost unusable (if i had GPU with slightly fatter back-plate i would be SOL). I'm just having a little buyers remorse moment that few months after I bought D15 they release D15S that solves the one problem I have with D15. frown.gif

Shame the NH-U14S doesn't follow this pattern

From the looks of it, this should solve the problem. SilverStone's HE01 dual-tower air cooler avoided interference with RAM by just making the right tower much narrower, but at the cost of some performance. This one solves the problem by only making it narrower in the area of the RAM slots, but provides much more cooling fin space overall.
